I've been having some tail light issues and after removing the lens I've realised that the whole unit needs rebuilding (reflective coating gone, bulb springs rusted etc).

While I fully intend to repair them one day, at the moment I want to replace them with some LED tail lights which will be far more effective than the originals anyway.

So does anyone know of anywhere (preferably in Australia) that has these to suit an fj40? Or even someone who stocks tail lights in general that I could adapt to my truck...

Just thought I'd ask before I go and buy something unknown off eBay or spend ridiculous amounts at an auto store

Cheers :D

A pic for inspiration :P

Use the casing of the old lights and fab up an LED one. I've done it before and have had no issues plus it only costs about $15 for everything if you have the light casing. I can tell you how if you want to know.

Ebay, look in the trailer section, Super Cheap/Roccas Bros, Repco, Auto 1, even Kmart and any truck parts place. Lots of styles to choose from and as Joe the Gadget Man* used to say " Bring your money with you!". You'll have to update your flasher can from mechanical to electronic one as LED lights draw about a 1/10th of the current and the mechanical flasher can needs that current to operate.

I just checked Roodogs ebay site (they're web site is down) a 40 tail light will cost you roughly $40 a side if you order a pair they'll send them free postage. So in budgeting terms $80 Oz pesos is the target price any solution cheaper than that may be worthwhile depending on the aggro required to fit them.

Usual disclaimer my only association with Roodogs is as a happy customer.

Instead of buying a new flasher you could just put a dummy load resistor across the posetive and ground of the flashers but then again an electronic flasher would be better

This could be an option but it would need to be as quick a job as possible so I can get back on the road... Maybe you could give me a basic picture of how you did it?
Thanks DD

Using an electronic flasher can and rear LED's shouldn't effect the original indicators at the front should it?

I'll give Roodogs a call on Monday to see if they also stock LED tail lights... only standard ones are on their ebay store

Thanks fellas

Your front indicators will work fine with an eletronic flasher can.
If you want you can put LED replacement globes in the standard housings. You won't have to worry about finding CAN bus compliant ones as 40's don't have a CAN bus.

If your handy you can make LED replacement globes yourself, but for the price of them out of China why bother.

I don't have any pics as the lights are on a trailer that's long gone (for me anyway) but I'll do my best at drawing a diagram

Sorry I meant just a basic idea not necessarily a photo but that would be great thanks.

LED's but with a custom tube rear bar: I used a single bulb in holder from the original lights to add the resistance required to make it flash normally..

You can replace your rear lights with complete units from Narva.. not expensive and the quickest solution.
