Has anyone used the 1156 30 LED bulbs from www.superbrightleds.com as reverse bulbs? I was noticing that my stock 1156 bulbs are not very bright and it would be nice to have some more light when backing up on the trail as well as when I back into my garage! So...anyone used them like/dislike? thanks!

Nope , not yet , but it would be nice to swap LED's into my clears if I can get some that have more angled output .

TY

PS : What about rigging your garage door opener to kick on a light ?

Barrypt5,

Read cary's lighting FAQ and follow the links to Daniel Stern's Narva reverse lamps. They are much brighter than stock. I installed a pair about a week ago and the difference is noticeable but I still want to add a BIG reverse/work light for camping.

Co-Pilot

FIRST of all NREA you spelled duct tape wrong it is D-U-C-T. Second of all instead of getting out and turning on my maglites I will just tell my sorry co-pilot (NR) to get his ass out and direct me when i really need to back up in a tight spot. HAHAHA :bounce:

1156 leds

I have not used them as back up lights, but I put amber ones in my arb bullbar signal lights, because the regular bulbs kept melting the lenses. I use them as marker lights though. Now they work great and no problems with heat. They are amber leds behind an amber lens, so they are not much brighter than standard. I would imagine they would work ok as back up. I got mine on ebay for like $10 for the pair including shipping.

I've been thinking of using the LED lights for the tail lights. So far from what I can tell most think they are too dim. Now for the reverse bulbs, I would pretty much guess the same. You may check into using 50 watt halogen bulbs which Pep boys carry or many mail order shops. They made a huge diff on mine and they run about $12.

I recently ordered a set of the 1156-W24 White LEDs from superbrightleds.com for the reverse lights. I didn't go with the 1156-W30 White LEDs because they have a narrow viewing angle (1156-W24 are wide angle).

I should have them tomorrow or early next week and will let everyone know how they compare with the stock bulbs.

Got the LEDs for the backup lights today from superbrightleds.com. Part number is 1156-W24 White LED bulb ($12.99 each). The LEDs are whiter than the stock bulbs, but the light output is really poor. These LEDs are not adequate at all and will be returned. Take a look (LED is installed on the right - US passenger side)...

Good move, B Gunna.. looks like the LED isn't the best fit for the back, but thanks for trying this out and sharing with the rest.. they don't make good turn signals either just in case you had a hankrin'..

I too am running the Narvas that Beowolf mentioned, from the big Cary group buy a while back- definitely the way to go, and not much more than the LED's IIRC...

I looked on danielsternlighting.com and couldn't find the backup lights listed... I'll have to email him about it. I'm also considering the DesignTech 50W lights (#20706). Know which one is better?

Is it a true 50 watter or equivalent?

If it's true, then would you have to modify socket, harness (?) or anything at all to accomodate it?

Nope the DTech bulbs are 50 watt halogen with a 1156 base...plug and play. I really like the added light but still I would like more. I'm thinking of cuttin the plastic bumper pices and fitting 50-100watt flood lights down there.

Cheaper 50 watt reverse bulb

I just wanted to bring this back to the top since I found a *cheaper bulb. I was in advanced auto parts and found these "Night Blaster" 50 watt halogen 1156 bulbs, made by optronics part# a-701. They look just like a standard 1156 bulb yet are halogen. They are as bright as the DesignTech and half the price, $2.50 a bulb vs. $7.00.

And if you want to get brighter replace the whole tailight housing with crystal lens, playing and switchin the LED or Halogen wont help that much.

LX,

I know this was most likely hashed over all ready in your LED tail light thread, but on that LED tail is the whole unit LED, stop, turn, and backup? I've thought about cutting and fitting the real deal DOT truck LED's in to the housing from super light or maxima.

For all practical purposes, you'll need a separate reverse/work lamp if you really need some light back there. If you have a hitch receiver system, then go to Autozone/pep boys and pick up a set of back up lights. These lights are low profile and will do a great job for you. They can attach to your receiver bracket/piece somehow. Otherwise, you can try to stuff all kinds of bulbs in the reverse lamp socket and still not be adequate for your needs.
