well,

This blows. The 80 is leaking ATF as the title of the thread suggests. The leak appears to be coming from the area where the TCase & Trans meet.

Is this a common issue?

How can I diagmose or pinpoint the leak?

Any suggestions?

It's a 1992 with a 3fe.

Thank you.

On my son's 92 we ended up pulling the transfer case and replacing the output transmission seal and the input seal on the transfer case. (They are the same part#) Our leak was coming from the transfer case seal. It dripped a couple drops every time it was parked.
I would clean the area very well and be sure where the leak is coming from. Removing the transfer case is a pretty big PITA.

I have a similar leak in my '92. Crawling around one day I found my trans oil cooler lines look to be in bad shape.
The easiest way to see them is to lay underneath with your feet out the driver side. Slide back until the front driveshaft is above your face and use a light. Should be pretty clear.

This is going to sound stupid and a little off topic but does a guy check the Trans level with the engine running and tranny in park? My 80 series leaks a little bit too.

Yes. Best way to do it is with it warm/hot. So take a nice long drive ~30 mins or so and then check...

I bet that's what's happening with mine. Conveniently enough, it started leaking 2 drives after I changed the gear oil in the T case. I bet said seal has been damaged & new fluid exposed the leak.

Plausible?

Will post pics tonight

How much is it leaking? Like a puddle? Or a couple of drops?

After 3 days, a half-dollar size spot

Ok, this may sounds crazy but what kind of gear oil did you put in? The reason I ask is that I tried switching to Mobile 1 synthetic engine oil and it was so thin that you could practically hear it pouring out on to the driveway. I switched back to conventional motor oil and now it just drips a few drops here and there (and everywhere!). I'm not as familiar with gear oil but maybe there is a difference in thickness?!

Oh yeah. I guess he said it was ATF. Sorry. I was in a pancake induced fog. It's national pancake day! My apologies.

3 days worth:

I may try that.

Well, thanks for the recommendation Summit Cruisers.

FYI the preliminary results indicate that blue devil did the trick.

This weekend I'll be doing a Rodney flush & refill along with a bottle of Blue Devil just to be safe.

Good to hear.

Thanks brother

Good to hear. Btw, you will need about 22 qts of ATF to complete the Rodney Flush. As far as Blue Devil products, I have also used the head gasket sealer in a Ford work truck last year that was burning about a gallon/week of antifreeze. We tried about everything, and after the Blue Devil was poured in, it has performed perfectly since then. How long will it last? Only time will tell, but still going strong.
