If you are taking 80 across from Chicago, Starved Rock State Park is worth a visit. I grew up near there and haven't been in over 20 years, but I remember it being pretty cool.
Yeah. It's got a few good day hikes (well, good for the mid-west... doesn't compare in difficulty to stuff in the Rockies). It hasn't really changed in 20 years. Tends to get packed on the weekends... one of the more popular parks outside Chicago, for sure.

If you're stopping at Starved Rock for a full day (or two) my kids really like Mattheissen SP, which is only a few minutes away from it. No camping there but you can hike down into the canyon and through the river to the waterfall at the end. Again very cool for the mid-west, but if you've hiked the Narrows at Zion you'll probably be disappointed ;)

(If anyone needs ideas of places to stop when heading out I-80 feel free to PM me)

Starting to get pretty stoked. Driving from PA, bringing my brother who's never done anything like this, so thats awesome. Gonna hit Dayton, and Chicago, anyone have any suggestions for neat/obscure/wild things between PA and ouray, please shoot em my way. Hit a lot of cool stuff solo last year, looking to one up myself this time.
If you are a fan of air & space museum, National Museum of the US Air Force is nearby Dayton OH. It's free entrance and it's 3 times bigger than Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Dulles VA. Also, Summit Racing is in Tallmadge OH on I-76.

add more POI since you're on I-80 after Chi town. The I-80 largest truck stop and museum in Walcott IA. The Archway museum in Kearney, NE. Cabelas HQ in Sidney NE.

3x larger? wow. I may need to make a trip east to visit that at some point. Honestly I was impressed by the Dulles Air and Space annex, which I thought was enormous.

A couple of decades ago we made a similar trip and planned a trip past the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, IA. It appears its still open if you were a fan of that movie it may get you off the interstate but still headed in the right direction out of Chicago. It looks to still be free, although they have some pay options now. When we went through the had equipment for a pickup game/inning of whomever happened to stop by at the same time.

There are a lot of weird and quirky places to stop if you're traveling across the country and have the time.

If you're coming across I-80 there's the future birthplace of captain James T. Kirk or the Buddy Holly crash site in Iowa. There's Carhenge in Nebraska (though it's kinda out of the way). Oh and the world's largest ball of stamps.

If you're coming via I-70 there's a 2 story outhouse in Illinois

If you're passing through St Louis with the kids, you've gotta stop for the whole day at the City Museum.

Don't bother with the Corn Palace in Mitchel, SD. Not nearly as cool as it sounds. Do look for good BBQ joints across the Midwest. In my road warrior days it was a cool way to thread towns and cities.

Agreed. I wish someone had told me that beforehand

Last year's drive proved successful in finding stuff, i.e. the geographic center of the US, so ill be plugging these all in and seeing what awaits

I’m planning my route from MA to CO. Probably taking a southern route (I-40) toward NM before swing north to south-west CO. Maybe hit some rustic NM hot spring before CO. I do want to detour to Great Sand Dune and drive through Medano Pass. Along the way, might go through Kentucky and pick up some good bourbon.

I’ve not been to Ouray. I did add sliders before LCDC last year plus’s BP51 lift and one size up on tires. My stock passenger side running board would not have survived. Maybe I would have picked different trails or lines if I had been OME stock. There were multiple stock 200s at the event.
one thought would be to just remove the running boards for the trip at least. I did these trails w/ 100's in the hills a few years back w/o sliders or running boards fine. Sliders are certainly nice to have, but at least (even temporarily) removing running boards is a good idea.

I agree that will save the running boards and gives you a little incremental clearness but if you find yourself where you need the slider, you'll be into the rocker panel.

True. Prob best to just pick the trails where clearance isn’t an issue.

Any update on when reservations signup will open?

^also interested.

Another trail related question: If I have a stock front bumper and OME lift, am I ok for more advanced trails? Scheduled to get a rear Slee bumper put on as well as a rear locker installed by Slee right before the event but will have the stock front (with TT hidden winch).

Depends if you don't mind scraping the bottom of the bumpers a bit or possible denting them, particularly in the corners. If you don't want any scuffs then in general green/blue trails should be fine, but red ones are 50/50 whether you come out unscathed. If you're OK with some scrapes on the bottom of your bumpers then you can do most if not all the trails on your setup.

I have a stock rear and it's held up fine in Ouray twice. Caught the trailer wiring harness on Imogene but otherwise it's been unscathed. YMMV of course.

My front is no longer stock, but I've taken people with stock rigs through Imogene and Alpine loop without any big damage. Again maybe some scraping at the bottom in one or two spots. I've only done Black Bear once but it was with a stock height truck with stock bumpers (@laserturbo91), though he had sliders and 34" tires IIRC. While he had no major damage the front bumper definitely took a few uppercuts in the outer corner (zoom in below) and I think his sliders took a bump on the steps on BBP.

All that said you should choose your trails based on your skills and your comfort/willingness to taking damage. I've seen videos of people rolling their trucks because they put a tire in a hole or took a really bad line. I like a challenge, but I personally try not to take damage myself, whereas some folks have something to prove and probably need this warning label on their dashboard as a reminder...
