I'm appraoching the time for the first oil change in my '06. I understand the filter is behind some sort of access plate under the truck.

Do I need a SST to get thefilter off, or will I be able to remove it with the old "adjustable steel band, strap-wrench-type filter wrench"?? OR will I need the type of tool that fits over the and of the filter and has a socket in the center for a wrench extension.

Sorry for the simple question, but I know someone knows and can answer this easily. The old style filter wrench was fine for my 80 series, but working through an access door might not leave enough room, I think.

Thanks

Just changed my oil a couple of weeks ago. I used one of the adjustable socketed tools to get it off, but I think you could probably use a strap wrench. Can't really remember how much room there actually was.

Depends on how sensitive your knuckles are I guess.

I ended up putting a larger filter on.

I used a strap type wrench the first time. Now that I'm the one putting them on I can take them off by hand.

Hey Longhorn

What larger filter did you use? Not much room down there.

Usually the oil filter will unscrew by hand but if not, I prefer the "cap type" filter wrench that drives with a 3/8" rachet. The ones that have a metal insert for the rachet drive are less prone to strip out than the all plastics ones. The other tools needed are an 8, 10, 12, and 14 mm socket and a short and long extension. Be sure your drain pan will hold at least 7 quarts. The oil drain plug is recessed above the splash pan. Remove a small cover plate for access. The Mobil One M-102 filter exceeds OEM specs. The M-209 is a longer version of the same filter and fits the space fine.

I use the cheap strap wrench. I like the access, so much easier than an 80...

I used the Mobil M1-209 filter with Mobil 1 oil. It is just about and inch...maybe two longer than the stock one. Fit perfectly.

Plenty of room. If you use the "cap-on-ratchet" type wrench you will find the OEM filter requires a different size than some aftermarket (WIX) filters. I had to make a Wal-Mart run mid-change the first time to remove a overtightened WIX installed by the selling dealer.

If you install to the correct torque by hand on the install then you will not need a wrench to remove it later. Just a rag to clean it for a grip. I use Nitrile gloves and they help.

Get the proper Toyota metal plug gasket. $.70 and lasts many changes. No leaks.

Performance Tool from advanced auto parts is a cap filter wrench for the OEM toyota D3 filter. 73mm and 14 flutes...W54108 is the part number. PITA to find. but I found it and I used it on my Lexus LX470 I just picked up. OEM filter on it was on super tight, but this got it off. I put an OEM D3 filter back on. good luck

I will say that I had to use a strap-type tool once, but since doing it myself, I've heard that hand tight is really the best way to do. Anyone else here just hand tighten their filter?

Back when I was in a Subaru, everyone was adamant about just hand tightening and not going overboard with it.

I hand tighten but always seem to need a wrench to get it back off.

Sent from my XT1060

On my 80, I always hand tighten to a bit under Toy spec and can never take them off by hand. Straps don't work usually. Metal bands either. Filter pliers neither. Caved in several filters trying those. Finally, discovered end-socket camming gizmo that works great.

Recommended is 3/4 - 1 full turn after the filter ring touches the surface, which is right at hand tight. I worked in a shop when I was 18 and did 6-8 oil changes a day, always tightened by hand and never had an issue. I've seen them so tight that the filter ring comes off, also had to bust a couple just to get them off.

I have always hand tightened the oil filters and never had an issue. When i did the first oil change on the LC, i destroyed and completely crushed and tore the filter apart because how tight it was. It is unnecessary to tighten so much.

I really like how the toyota filters come greased on the gasket.

Drop the "skid" plate to get good access and check for cracked hoses, etc while under there. Filter can be unscrewed by hand or big channel locks. Forget the strap chingadera, you don't need to save the filter......

I always screw the filter on by hand.

My dad showed me when I was a boy how to hammer a big flat blade thru the filter and use both hands to get it off. Messy, but effective.

Hand tighten. If you need a tool to get it off, you're doing it wrong.
