I know this thread is quite old now, however when google searching the topic of largest tires to fit on my 100series, this thread came up often. So I wanted to share what I ended up with.
I wanted to build a nice street LC that I'll drive everyday, that is dirt road capable and looks good doing it. Ive had custom crawlers and designated offroad vehicles.. this was for a nice driver that looked meaty.. so...
I chose the BFG A/T KO.. IMO the best A/T money can buy. Quiet, great traction, great balance, strong shoulder, exceptional sidewall... BFG is proud of them, but I think they are worht every penny.
305/55/20 will fit. Inflated it measures 33.5" tall X 12.5" wide. I mounted them to a set of off the shelf 20X9 BMF Novakane 5 wheels 5x150mm obviously, 110mm bore with +25 offset. This how they build them.
I fitted the wheels and tires to the vehicle on a lift. At full drop there is lots of room.. I cycled the steering lock to lock.. all is good. Once on the ground with the stock suspension there is an approx 1" rake bias to the front. Even with this there is clearance. Cycling the steering lock to lock reveals that the pinch weld inner fender bulge hits the tread edge of the tire about 60% thru the steering cycle. It was a very minor "touch" though.
The rears clear no problem at stock height.
I adjusted the front torsion bars to approx 3/4 of full height.
Mounting the wheels revealed that the center bore of the wheels was 1/4" too shallow to allow complete clearence for the front 6 hub studs. This was corrected easily by trimming the excess 1/4" off these studs. After the stud shortening the wheels easily cleared.
On the road these perform great. they are silent. when turning in parking lots there is one small point in the steering cycle where the front tires "kiss" the inner fender. I looked at trimming the inner fender and found that this would remidy the clearance issue. It would however expose the pinch weld, if contact with that was to occur it could cut the tires. I decided to leave it to protect the tires, as I dont care if the fronts kiss the inner fender every so often..
In offroad situations there is very little room for articulation beyond medium difficulty trails. In the rear more than approx. 5" of up travel will result in interference with the metal fender, as due to the width of the wheel and tire package the tire wont fully tuck in the rear well. the front does tuck in.
So... if you want a very capable wheeling machine. This wheel and tire package will limit your capabilities. If you want a meaty mall crawler that is planty "trail" capable as in gravel road capable / established dirt road capable.. these fit.
