Largest tire that will fit on OEM tire carrier?

Nice work so far. For $55 I'm in.

How many inches does the middle of the crossmember get lifted on a stock truck? I can see that it's angled for maximum lift.

After this, I gotta figure out how to carry spare gas, since the 2nd tank mod isn't gonna fit :D

This mod effectively levels the tire out and gets the front of the spare tire further from the ground. There is a support rod under the aluminum tread plate on the rear bumper that sets the height of the rear portion of the spare tire. If you do a body lift and your rear bumper supports raising this rod, you can raise the back of the spare tire and gain more clearance. This rod has 2 holes on each side about 1.5 inches apart. With my 1.5 inch BL, I indexed the bolts up 1.5 inches and drilled a third hold on each side so the rod still has 4 bolts holding it on. There is room to raise the rod only 1 inch by drilling 4 new holes if your vehicle has a 1 inch BL.

With a skinny enough of a spare tire, you can make it disappear as seen in the first pictures of this thread. I no longer do a 5 tire rotation and purchased a skinny 34 inch Super Swamper to be the spare. This tire is 3 inches narrower than my 35's. Since I have 3 kiddos, we are always getting in the back for something and I need that space for the massive quantity of "stuff" that accompanies travel with kids. There is no room for a spare tire in the cab.

The second two pictures show a 285/75/16 tire mounted as it would be in a stock LC. The rear most rod the spare tire rests against has been returned back to it's factory location for a test fit. I purposely run a rear receiver to further protect the spare tire, provide a HD skid and because I frequently tow. Without a receiver, the tire will be more exposed.

If you run a swing out carrier, these brackets wouldn't make any sense unless you are into carrying two spares.

Final test fit will happen tomorrow before the next snow storm rolls in.

Although I now have all the parts, I want to do one more fit check to ensure there are no surprises.

I'll post more details in the Merchandise Storefront which is under the Vendor's Market tab within the Classifieds area. Here is the link:

I only had 10 kits made to begin with. If there is enough interest I can have plenty more made.

Here is what they look like.

Thanks,

Adam

Adam these turned out great!

Can somebody confirm for me that a BFG KM/2 in 315-75-16 will fit in the spare spot? I'm ready to buy the brackets, and the five new tires.

Thanks Adam!

If the tire is a true 35 inches, likely 34.8, I'm afraid that it will be too tight. There just isn't enough room between the last two cross members for a tire larger than 34.25 inches.

Before building these kits, I just wanted a spare that tucked up and out of the way which is why I went with a narrow Swamper on a 6 inch wide trailer wheel.

Other advantages include:

A. Getting to the spare is a pain so I don't worry about putting it in the rotation.

B. It's 3 inches narrower than my 315's which gives me that much more clearance.

C. It tucks up completely so you can't see it, so nobody knows that it is a different style than the 4 on the ground.

D. Most importantly, I usually get tired of the tires before they wear out and a fifth tire in the rotation makes them last 20% longer.

E. The Swamper is very close in size to my 315's so in the event I need it, it won't cause any damage to the drive train.

If you use a worn 315, say with half tread, and your receiver doesn't encroach on this space too much, then yes it will work, but again I wouldn't put a half worn tire into the rotation.

Another option I just thought of is to deflate the tire before winching it up. It would probably be small enough to fit, but this would require a way of filling it up when you need it.

With another inch of clearance, fitting a 315 wouldn't be an issue.

Let me know if I can help.

Adam,

Received the carrier yesterday, very, very nice. I really appreciate the amount of time that you have devoted to make this concept a reality. I spent last night priming and spray painting each piece, in hopes to get the final product installed tonight. The directions that you included are a added surprise and will help the newest of newbs. Just like to say job well done and hopefully I can get a few of my RT install pictures uploaded tomorrow.

Got mine the other day. Nice kit. Haven't had a chance to install yet. I gotta figure out what to do with my EMS tailpipe since it is currently using one of the required mounting holes.

fzjadam-

How about sandwiching the EMS mounting strap between the bracket and the frame rail or bend the strap to accomodate the bracket?

it will fit. ive got a 35" trxus with 90% tread in the oem spare location. its snug, but fits. no contact with panhard or rear crossmember. thinking about adding these brackets to raise it up those precious few inches. i like this idea better than spacing it with nuts/washers..

Considering the price offset for the mod/your time vs. bracket/direct install and Adam is spot on with offering this upgrade. Good work.

Thanks for the kind words. After buying lots of products over the years, I have a few ideas of "how it should be done". Hopefully this products meets everyone's expectations. If not, please let me know so it can be corrected.

As for tire sizes, I forgot to mention that the true size of 35 inch tires is all over the map. My old MTR's fit and my new MTR's do not. Based on my measurements, a 34.25 inch tire will fit with a little wiggle room left over. Depending on the brand of tire, a 315 may fit just fine.

A few pictures....

A few pictures....

Adam has designed a complete spare tire relocation kit which includes all necessary hardware; I chose to re-use some my OEM hardware because I had just performed this mod a few months ago, and inspected my hardware then. Regardless, this is a complete plug and play system, worthy to note as a replacement for the spare tire mod. I now have OEM quality equivalent system that leveled a 285/75/15 spare relocated it 15" off the terra-firma.

it will fit.

I've finally got my new tires, and everything fits great. No trailer hitch, stock height LX450. 315-75-16 BF Goodrich KM/2.

Nice kit, fits great, easy to install, came with all new bolts and stuff.

Thanks Adam!

I have to ask how did you get that slee hitch receiver to work in your stock rear bumper AND keep the spare under there?!?

With the spare tire in the stock locationi, I have removed the SLEE designed diagonal frame rail brackets and shortened the receiver tube, what I have now I only use this for accessories, i.e. receiver bike rack, etc...
