I am getting new tires and matching spare for my fj80 1993. I want to be able to mount the spare back underneath the rig. What size tire is the largest I can go and still be able to mount the spare underneath?

Its going to come down to what tire model too but in my experience 295's were the largest I could get under the truck. My 315 Durantacs and General Grabbers were not even close to fitting. I think someone once posted they got a 315 BFG AT under there as they tend to run smaller.

My old 305's fit under there. Barely.

I've got a 315 75 16 BFG MT KM1 (around 40% tread) under my 80 with the stock spare tire mount. It fits with a bit of room to spare.

Why would you want your spare tucked underneath where a speed bump pop it

Nice Which one's did you have?

I had 305/75's - at the time they were Dunlop Fierce Attitudes, but I think they're under Goodyear's name now.

Tromz, I hope you're joking.

On a more serious note, when I went on trails I did have to leave the spare at camp... because it WOULD be a liability. It did stick out quite a bit - although if I'd raised up the mount under there it would have fit better.

Awesome. Thanks for your input. Your rig looks good! I am planning on making some rock sliders similar to the ones you have. Great build.

If you really want the largest spare in the stock location........

Thats a true 35 spare, a bit skinny but true 35.

No I'm not joking. The spare is highly vulnerable in the stock location. What good is a spare if it gets ruptured dragging it's sidewall across an obstacle.

I put my 315/75R16 Nitto trail grappler with full tread underneath for a bit to see if it fit and they run on the big side. it was vary close to the track bar and hung very low but was totally out of the way for every day driving. spacing the tire cradle up would make it "OK?"
when I went off road I would move it either inside or on the roof rack.
I have since removed all the underneath spare tire cradle and hoist mechanism to start designing a sub tank and am making a swing out bumper. its inside in the back for now.
