Don't know that I would want to mount my HAMM on my mount either.

How much total weight do you now think you have that thing supporting?

Im not sold on the HAM in that spot, But the whole tray and upper arm come off easily, So I figured I could remove the HAM when not in use.
My laptop is ~ 4LBS and the HAM is under 3LBS, Plus all the wiring, I figure a little under 10LBS.

It is good to see the options out there for you guys with lots of cab space. Vitesse_6 I like the fit and adjustments that you have done. My challenge is to find a mount and a placement that allows me to travel with it while at the same time still have a front seat passenger. My son swears that he saw a vid of a guy who had a sub-notebook, under 2lbs and 10 inches, pop out of his glove box on a sliding tray. Given the size of the 40's box that seems a non starter but I haven't given up on that completely. Anyone know of a system that could tuck into a 40? As to placement if it can't pop out of the glove box like a hot girl from a bachelor party cake then I was thinking of something with a swing arm that could mount onto an arm of the roll cage. Obviously given the fact that the cage will be mounted to the frame either the arm or the mount will have to include some thing to dampen shock from movement. Any ideas or is all this just crazy talk. Thanks.

I don't know about putting one in a glove box, but there are monitors you can get that will pop out of a DIN radio slot. Also you can get cases and power supplies for mini mother boards that will fit in DIN radio slots. Just need a keyboard and mouse.

I just went down and took another look at the glove box. While it is narrow it is also deep I can easily see a small sub notebook on rails sliding out of there sideways and the swivel around for use out over the open door of the box. There would be plenty of room in the unused ashtray to mount an AC/DC converter to power it and Logitech and others make a slew of optical mice and remote pointing devices that I use any way for work and are very reliable. The trick will be organizing the rails and a swiveling platter and cushioning the thing for shock. Additionally gonna need to select hardware carefully. With space at a premium good AM/FM/CD/DVD unit with a screen that can take mutiple inputs, e.g. GPS or RGB or a small sub notebook that can do those duties using a radio or tv tuner card or USB device. I can see this being a new side project...

It is interesting there are really three visions of an in car pc at work here. One is a notebook pc that is mounted on fixed stand. The second, a variant of the first, with a much smaller subnotebook, think Asus Eee PC with 7 inch screen, mounted on a platform with rails hidden away in the glove box. Third is parting the pc function out with a screen that pops out of an AM/FM/CD/DVD head unit on the dash which, hopefully can take input not just from a cpu unit mounted out of sight but possibly other gear i.e.,GPS. I have to admit I hadn't thought much about option three and taking a look at the example in the links, I have to some more research and testing. That Paasonic unit is nice, I need to try and find one in a store to look over closely.
