Figured I'd start a thread to share my experience with the import process on my new 90, track progress on the project and keep track of part numbers and the like. Hope fellow members can keep me from running too far astray, and if I learn any lessons I'll track them here for posterity. I assume these 90's will get more popular as time goes on.

I did my import through The Import Guys, after reading good experiences with them in Jalopnik. They offer an inventory of imported cars, and also have an import service. Most of the cars in stock are Skylines, Supras and the like, along with a few Kei cars. I tried Steve at Land Cruisers Direct after reading the reviews here, but I couldn't get a response from him even when offering to buy a vehicle he had in inventory. I tried multiple times to contact him and never heard back. At The Import Guys, I mostly dealt with Dylan, who was responsive, helpful, and gave me advice on bids and reserves.

After losing about a dozen auctions, I saw this 90. It's a 1996 3-door in RZ trim (which I believe is the highest tier on the 3-door), with a 1KZ-TE and 190k km on the clock. I had initially wanted a manual, but I thought an auto would be a little easier on my first RHD car- one fewer thing to think about doing backwards. The first round, the auction failed to meet reserve. Dylan was able to find out what the reserve was, and I waited for it to come back up and bid to win the second time. Won the auction January 13 for 829,000 yen - higher than I initially budgeted, but this one was clean and the 3-doors seem to be a little pricier than the 5-doors.

Total cost from the Import Guys on top of the vehicle was just under $4k. That includes shipping to Newport News, insurance, all costs on the Japanese side, all costs on the US side (excepting NC state sales tax and registration), a WA state title and The Import Guys' flat rate fee.

I'm still waiting for a ship date, but will update with dates as soon as I get them.

I'm going to try to keep this post updated with my actual spend on this project, including part numbers and sources. I hope this can help others who are looking at the 90 platform.

So it's looking less like a "maybe" build and more like a "definitely" build. Importer says things are backed up for them at the Japanese docks, so it's looking like it could be up to 6 weeks before the 90 gets underway. In the meantime I'm basically an impatient overexcited child with a credit card, and I've started ordering a bunch of goodies.

-Winch. Won an eBay auction last night for a Warn EVO 10-S. Was initially planning on a Badlands Apex, but they've raised the prices to the point where the little bit extra for a Warn seemed to make sense.
-Bumper. Found an ARB Bullbar bumper with SRS for a reasonable price and pulled the trigger on it.

The biggest detractor is that both of these are going to take weeks to get here, but since I don't have the 90 it just means less time I have to store them.

I've also been watching Amazon Warehouse like a hawk and snagged a Bearcat 880, a single ARB onboard compressor and a pair of Philips LED headlights. So in summary this has been way more shopping and way too little wrenching for my tastes. This weekend I'm going to finish my 128i project and then turn my attention to getting my M3 ready for sale to make space.

If my recommendation means anything, go with Trucklites. One of the benefits of the round headlights on the 90 is that you can install these and bring lighting up to 2022 standards..

Thanks, @lugueto! As a happy accident, it looks like the Philips units I bought are just re-branded Truck-Lites.

Quick update.... the Prado is cleaned, docs released and has cleared Japanese controls. It's at the port waiting for the next ship. I don't know how Russia's invasion of the Ukraine will affect timing, but it should be here in a month if no issues.

One question... as I'm trying to get my baseline maintenance stuff together, does anyone know of any substitutes for the stock radiator? I'm seeing $561 plus international shipping for the stock rad. EPC shows no substitutions or other models, but I'm hoping there's something else out there. Has anyone tried to fit a petrol 4Runner radiator in there? Thanks!

Found the answer. The petrol and diesel units have the connections reversed. They are not interchangeable.

So I have three options...

1. Roll with what I get. The "pink milkshake" may be over reported. I've certainly never personally seen a 4Runner or Taco radiator fail, and the fact that the Toyota units are so hard to find could be taken to mean the Prado units rarely fail and Toyota doesn't stock them. Keeping what I get and watching for any signs of contamination is an option.

2. Replace with an aftermarket unit. I've found a Behr unit in Latvia for about $325 total - half of that is shipping.

3. Replace with a manual radiator and a separate transmission heat exchanger. There's a group in the UK that makes an all-aluminum radiator without the integrated transmission cooler, and several options stateside for a thermostat-controlled heat exchanger for the transmission. Would end up being about $350 or so. My only hesitation here is that the transmission temps would be outside the factory range - slower to warm up and I think the thermostat temps are a little higher than the factory 160.

Anyone been down this road before that can offer some insight?

In the interest of recording for anyone who has the same question, it looks like the "pink milkshake" issue is mostly limited to the 3400 petrol engine. I'm planning to check the radiator out when it gets here, but not proactively order a new one.

Got news from the importer yesterday. Looks like the delay in shipping was due to an issue with the charging system on the 90. The guys at the port were able to start it with an external battery but not keep it running. The shipper won't allow the truck on board if it won't stay running, so the guys at the port are replacing the alternator on Monday. This is certainly not the news I was hoping for, but it explains the delay and it's not impossible that an issue with the charging system surfaced after the truck being parked for at least 3 months outside in the winter. In theory, it's first in line for the next ship as soon as the port can verify it will stay running.

Thanks, @JDM Journeys ! We understood this wasn't going to be the fastest or most convenient route, so spirits aren't too deflated. I'm hoping it's just an alternator and not anything more serious. Lots of praise to Dylan over at TheImportGuys.com.... he's been communicative, helpful and very patient with my constant need for information.

Is it equipped with dual batts? If not, it's an easy addition, once you get it and assess. Also, an idle up switch is prewired behind the dash. You just need to provide the switch. But... you probably don't need any help buying more stuff, by the looks of things. We are cut from the same cloth it seems. My wife still reminds me of the snorkel I had sitting in the living room for several months while I waited on RORO (I wanted to be able to look over at it). And that was 15 years ago! :)

Heh, that sounds like me. I'm just grateful right now that the delay on the ARB bumper is nearly as long as the delay on the Prado itself, or I'd have a lot of explaining to do at home.

Dual batts are almost certainly in my future.... I'll review your build thread when the time comes and copy your setup. Idle Up switch is on the way from Lithuania...

I just purchased a ‘96 5 door JDM model a month or so ago and will definitely be watching this build.

How did you determine that was the right tow hitch to fit? I have been searching up and down and cannot find the right one. Are you buying a wiring harness for it? Supposedly there is a plug-in near the jack but I haven’t looked yet.

A few folks - maybe on here? - have mounted up the 3rd gen 4Runner hitches. At least one guy said he had to shim his in, but the bolt holes lined up. I don't remember exactly where I saw it, but there's a thread out there with pics showing the shim. I'll get detailed pics if mine ever arrives... I also picked up a Tekonsha T-one 4Runner harness for about $20. I don't know if it'll fit but it's cheap enough to take the risk.

*edit: Here they are:

4Runners and Prados are the same vehicles with different bodies. 3rd gen 4Runners and 95 Prados are the same. 90s, being shorter, will be the same from the doors forward and behind the rear axle. Engines transmissions, chassis components, suspension, etc are exactly the same.

That's why the bolt holes line up. The reason you have to shim the tow bar is because the bodies are different.

Thanks! That certainly explains it.

I'm still waiting on a ship date, but I'm planning on making a junkyard run sometime next weekend. There are a couple of 3rd gens in the yard nearest me, and I'm hoping at least one has a hitch still on it.

We finally got space on a ship! The Prado is due to board the Galaxy Ace on Monday, March 28th, and she's due in Newport News Monday, May 2nd.

Looking forward to what you plan on doing with yours! I purchased a 1996 4door back in December. It's taken a few months to ship due to delays and the holidays. I finally got word earlier this week that it has finally shipped from Kobe.

Looks like were on the same Boat (Galaxy Ace) with an ETA of 5/2. I've got mine coming into Newport News too. Is this your first import? The staff at NNMT are great to work with.
