Long story short, a lot of the U series engines are having head gasket failures at 200k miles related to people not replacing their radiator coolant often enough.

The Toyota UR engine is found in the following Toyota vehicles:
  • 2012–2021 Toyota Land Cruiser: Available in Japan, China, the Middle East, and Australia
  • 2010–2012 Toyota Sequoia
  • 2010–2019 Toyota Tundra
The Lexus models that have the UR engine include:
  • Lexus IS F: The 2UR-GSE engine was used in the 2007–2014 Lexus IS F.
  • Lexus RC F: The 2UR-GSE engine has been used in the Lexus RC F since 2015.
  • Lexus GS F: The 2UR-GSE engine was used in the Lexus GS F from 2015–2020.
  • Lexus LC 500: The 2UR-GSE engine has been used in the Lexus LC 500 since 2017.
  • Lexus IS 500 F-Sport Performance: The 2UR-GSE engine has been used in the Lexus IS 500 F-Sport Performance since 2022

A rather lengthy video on this recent trend:

I think there may be a detail missing. This is my suspicion, since these engines have a tendency to have multiple coolant leaks from valley plate or radiator. If they are not detected and fixed timely, the coolant gets too much exposure with air and can turn a bit acidic over time, which could be the reason for this failure.
Other reason could be that the engine block wraps when such low coolant situations happen and may lead to gasket issues. (Not sure how high temp the engine should get to experience warping).

i just got some coolant test strips in. although the 100K fluid looks nice and pink, it tests a pH of 11.

that is HIGHLY basic, and far from neutral.

i guess it is time for a full radiator flush.

Check new coolant before you dump yours based on pH alone. Pages 5 and 6 of the above linked thread have pictures of people’s results and it appears low-mileage coolant tests at about 11.

Can we stop discussing this in multiple threads?
