Hi all,

I’ve owned my 2009 land cruiser 79 series V8 for 10 years now and never had a problem whatsoever. However just a few weeks ago I was driving and the engine check light came on. There was no change in power or anything obvious, so I kept using the car as normal.

But just a week ago I decided to plug in my OBD II scanner and it showed to have the following 2 error codes:

  • P0500 – Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction
  • P0504 – Brake Switch A/B correlation
It’s funny because the Speedo functions as normal and so do the brake lights. So I decide to ask my mate who owns a same Land Cruiser 79 V8 if we could swap over the Speedo sensor (located on the gearbox, since our models are non-ABS) and the brake switch (located on the brake pedal) from his car into mine and he agreed.

Having done so and cleared the error codes from the memory we decided to test drive the car a few kilometers. Everything was fine, but the next day when I started the car in the morning to go to work, the engine check light came on! Plugged in the OBD II scanner and the exact 2 errors again!!

Since the errors showed up with the speedo senor and brake switch borrowed from my mates 79, eliminates the possibility of either the Speedo senor or the brake switch being faulty. I have since followed up the connectors and wiring as just to make sure everthing is in working order, but still no luck with the engine check light going off!

I have no problem driving the vehicle as the Speedo function as normal and so do the brake lights, but I do plan on selling the car sometime in the near future and would like the engine check light being switched off! I would really appreciate feedback from anyone whose come across a similar issue or just some advise on how I can erase these errors.

Thanks

Related to the speed Sensor P0500 you are on factory size tires .? if so, your speed it's actually correct .?

P0500 not only can be related to the speed sensor itself, but also to the harness between speed sensor and the ECM / Speedo at the cluster.

P0504 can be related same way to the brake harness. Guess all your brake factory bulbs are working ok and you don't have a trailer harness on place .?

At the moment the tires that are on the car - Bridgestone Dueler Mud-terrain 235/85R16, which are at not too different in size to the Dunlop's the car originally came with. So i dont think that should be the cause. However i think i will have to recheck the wiring as you have suggested, just to make sure.

The funny thing is that all the brake lights are functioning as normal, and since i dont have a trailer socket in place the wiring is all original and untouched! But still the P0504?

Could the hand brake switch be a possible cause? I ask this because what i have come to notice recently while driving the car, is that the hand brake warning light on the dash acts like a shift light for some reason! Every time i hit 3500 rpms the light start to flicker?? I find that funny since i have no shift light installed nor have i rempped or done anything to the ECU.
