So what's the benefit of running two shocks?

The reason two shocks are use are if a vehicle is going to be traveling at high rates of speed over extremely rough terrain with the suspension cycling rapidlt non-stop (baja type truck), one shock will heat up enough not operate correctly, in some cases, not damping at all, so a second shock is used so that way they both take the abuse and keep the suspension under control, and will remain damping until the vehicle slows. That's what I've been told anyway.

That's right, WL. The shocks that were on my 40 were Doetsch Tech's Pre Runner series, built for that purpose. These are just the most recent version of those. They'll be needed if I'm cruising the mall parking lot at a high rate of speed, to handle those pesky bumps! ;)

Little curve ball....

Well this weekend Kommando threw me a curve ball. After it running so good the last month or so since I have been moving it around and getting things going, it started running like S*%t... As I was driving it around on my place, I noticed it was running kinda rough with some minor back firing, thinking "well, it's still not up to temp and it's been two weeks since it ran last, no big deal, it'll clear up" Well, it didn't, by the time I parked it (about 20 minutes later), it was REALLY runnning rough and backfiring while idling. Imagine if you will, the old "Poppin' Johnny" tractor's.. yep idle a little, the back fire several times and so on. Pulled the plugs and looks klike #2 ,3 & 5 are firing, but the other 5 or sooted black (not firing I suppose, or vise versa). Compression check- good compression, all cylinders within 10 lbs of each other. Plugs back in and put the timing light on it...waaaayyyyy off timing.. O.K...little advance, no go, a little retard (hehe he said retard...) same issue, still rough and worse. I haven't checked the piston/distributor position yet, but I am suspecting that is going to be way off also. I am thinking new timing chain and gears..Idea's anyone!!!!

That sucks, WL. What kind of ignition system are you running? Stock cap/rotor set up or an electronic type?

HEI ignition..

what carb are your running? have you checked the fuel filter? check spark plug wires for burns. call me if you like and i can tell you other thing to check next.

I would replace the fuel, HEI electronics (you always need an extra), rebaseline the floats and timing, and ohm the plug wires.

Thanks Edwin, I'll let you know. I'll be off next Monday for some Dr's appointments, need to come by, I need to locate a part...The carb I'm running is the Edlebrock performer, or should I say, it is the twin to it, can't remember the name, Edlebrock bought the company, the rebuild kit for it is the same as the Performer... I want to say Carter, but I have to look agian. HEI is working good, all plugs have fire to them (I have one of the doodads that you hook inline of the plug wire and it flashes when the plug fires, all seem to be firing), no burns or scars on the wires, all of them snap tight into their respected terminals. Fresh gas, although I do see a minute amount of crud in the filter, I'll have to look into that further, don't remember if the carb has an internal filter at the fuel connection.. I had the timing set at 6dg BTDC, now it's about 40ish..I suppose, nowhere near the pointer on the cover. :meh:

Do you have a fuel regulator? I'm running the same carb and have a regulator set at 2lbs. Helps it not flood out.

thats the carb i would run if i had a V8 along with a reg. have you opened the carb to see if there is any trash in it? you might have trash in the tank also. next time it's running hold the idle at or around 2k see if it will die. if it does turn of the key and take the air cleaner off and look down into it. at the same time give it gas to see if it's giving gas thew the jets. if you don't see the fuel spraying then you can start checking lines, filter & tank. you do have the pick-up hose on the right fitting & not the return? i have seen that more offer then you would think. just some things to check.

Thanks guys, yes, I do have a fuel regulator, also have it adjusted to 2 psi. Last night, I took the fuel line from the carb off, cleaned out a little curd, not much there, put it back together, and it helped, didn't solve everything, but helped, so I guess you guys have me on the right track. Being I put a used poly tank in after screwing up my original tank with a liner kit, I am going to drain the tank tonight and see if any water and dirt comes out, the plastic gas cans I used to get gas for it the other day I suspect may have been contaminated with water (didn't think to empty them completely before filling, so...) BTW, after the fuel line cleaning, the timing came back to nomal, but the thing now sounds like it has a blower the way it idles (revs up a little, then slows down) and the exhaust tone really doesn't sound right still... I'm gettin' there.....That doesn't do it, another carb rebuild will happen.

I always put a clear/plastic fuel filter before my carb just to see that fuel is getting to the carb. I also run a fuel filter before the fuel pump. In the fuel inlets of the carb there are fine screens. You want to pop the top of carb off. You can do that while still on the vehicle.

Oh yea, less than 3 weeks until round up so GEET-R-DONE!

Got pretty much the same clear filter on mine, I just don't have a prefilter..yet.. The inlet on the carb comes out and that screen was clear of any obstructions/dirt/crud, so I'm pretty confident no crud got that far :bang: I'm hoping it's the gas...
