Hello everyone, I have come into ownership of this kzj78 and the previous owners butchered it. It came with a hiace 5L in the engine bay. I have built a turbo kit for the 5L with a wrx turbo as has been discussed on here in other threads. Thankyou everyone for that priceless info.
Having said that, I guy I know locally is wanting to swap a 3B for the 5L. Can you please give me your opinion on which is a better engine, I have gearboxs to suit both engines but really want to make sure I choose the most reliable engine, I can mod the turbo setup to go either way.
On the way to me right now via slow ships is a full lift kit, new door seals and lots of parts that were Missing to get this cruiser back to where it should be.

Yes, I'm building my own roof rack prices for aftermarket parts here is a bit crazy.

If the 3B is in good condition it is a reliable, if slow, engine. Parts are getting harder to find.
Don’t know much about 5L, but should also be reliable if in good condition. Parts availability is probably better over the years.
I believe both were not designed for turbo applications so one needs to build/drive accordingly. A separate water temp gauge and boost/egt should be installed so you can monitor limits better.

Good info above. Both the 3B & 5L are super reliable in stock form. In NZ we have huge numbers of 3L powered Hiluxes & plenty of those have had a turbo fitted but I don't have any direct experience with them.

Cheers
Clint

Thankyou for your replys. Yes, coldtaco I have the egt and boost gauges on the way.
The 5L is even fitted to the kun25r hiluxs in some parts of the world so for parts availability it is probably the better choice. The 3b however gives the ability to fit the heavy duty gearbox to the car. So many engine and gearbox options to consider.
I appreciate all input from everyone, so if you have a thought for me regarding this project please let me know.

What gearbox have you got on now?

The vehicle came with a hiace 2wd gearbox and the scariest home made driveshaft you have ever seen. I currently have a G52 bundera box with transfer and a h55 from a 60 series both on there way to me right now. So will have gearboxs that should suit both engine options

That's some very useful info coldtaco. I have only ever worked on 2,3,5L engines but I like the idea of an engine without a timing belt. Not sure it's worth it to have a heavier older engine just to loose the timing belt. But must consider all options.

I have an LJ79 which comes with a factory 3L which I turbo intercooled and I'm quite happy with it. The 5L is practically identical just larger cc so I guess it would be even better. If your 5L is healthy I would just keep it.

A happy day today as a shipment of parts for the cruiser arrived. Signalling the start of alot of work to come in the coming weeks when I am not working on other people's cars and boats and whatever.
Managed to get a couple of the second hand rims and tires on the car before finishing up. Looks so much better than tiny surf rims that hit the calipers. Happy times.

Got the rear dobinson springs and new shocks in. See if I can get the front springs in tomorrow and start tearing into the gearbox. Slowly getting through the list. Even found a broken spring in the rear. Guess the old girl has had a hard life in the past.

Got the avm hubs fitted.
Yeah, the shock still has its retaining strap, the supplier didn't supply all the bush's required to fit them. Got 1 out of the 4 required bush's so will have to go find some new bush's in the next few days.

Got a big alloy radiator as the hiace van radiator that was fitted was just wrong with it's box section welds holding it to the body. Will be building factory style side brackets for this one.

So can anyone point me in the direction of a set of rear electric window switch surrounds for my car. Managed to get a hold of the front switches but really need the surrounds for the rear doors as mine are no longer with the vehicle. Any color, I don't mind. Just want factory switches back in the car.

What would be awesome is if someone had a file to 3D print new replacements. I don't suppose anyone would have a file for that.

Can anyone help me with pinout information for this 12pin plug on the passenger side of my rhd kzj78w-pet?
I am trying to fix what someone thought was wiring.
I think that this plug is for all the engine sensors but am not sure. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
