2- high pinon? No pinion
This is the position of the pinion.....
3- reverse cut?
Reverse cut is required for the front diff !
This one would work for the front

Correct! But they are the weakest 4.88's. Any upgrade to aftermarket ratios, needs the whole housing changed too; where as the other ranges can take the aftermarket ratios direct.

learned something new today.
factory 4.88s are the weakest.

humm, but they stand up to a turbo'd intercooled 1PZ running 36" tractor tires (read wicked traction torque) with no issues at all

4.88 ratios are the thinnest. If you wish to install any aftermarket ratios into the 4.88 housing you can't, as the replacements are larger. So, the housing would have to be changed. Installing aftermarket ratios into a 4.56 housing, or any other than 4.88, is no issue.

This is usually expelained on the websites prior to ordering for LJ's.

Don't confuse xxsilveradoxx he has a KZJ......So aftermarket full thgickness R and P's will be fine.

As far as I know its only the rear factory LJ's with 4.88's in open or LSD which is thinner. The fronts are normal pinion offset and thick rings.

"As far as I know its only the rear factory LJ's with 4.88's in open or LSD which is thinner"

Correct, but it applies to the KZJ's too. A KZJ is virtually a LJ, except for the engine and a few other non decrip items.

The KZJ did not come out factory with 4.88 so not an issue.
Cause I have one.....The factory rear diff on the KZJ series use thick rings.

True and factory ratio is not 4.88. Can't recall what a factory unit is.

I converted my lj70 over to a 1kz but kept the original 4.88 ratio. Recently changedover to 4.56 ratio and I feel it was a waste. 4.88 ratio is best for a 1kz on 35" tyres, so will be converting back to 4.88.

However, considering aftermarket 4.88 ratios for the 4.56 housing.

The rear 3rd member housing on models with oe 4.88 has an odd pinion offset and cannot be regeared. We sell new bare 3rd members, aftermarket gears etc that wok together. A bare housing isnt that expensive, so no biggie. We also have pre built 4.88 3rd members on the shelf with aftermarket 4.88 solid preload spacer, etc

Dam I missed some funny stuff, haven't been here in a while. I got the impression 2lte 78's need not apply!!
gotoy the thin rear gears, in my opinion, are not week. A good percentage of gear failures are due to having very little to no bearing preload on the side bearings and the pinion bearings. In turn, this causes deflection between the pinion and the ring gear that can cause destruction. Personally speeking a solid collar and a new set of bearings with a tight set up should be fine.
Just food for thought
Take Care

Gears

It's not that the OEM 4.88 is especially weak (nor strong). The problem is that the housing has a different offset on the pinion bore so cannot be re-geared if you plan to change ratio. Also the OEM "thin" gears are not available aftermarket. That said, if you've got one lying around, run it.
Toyota OE 4.88 offset.webp

I know this is an old thread but if I had factory 4:88, with the offset pinion, the housing will only take a Toyota ($$$$) thin ring gear.

Could I swap the 8 tooth pinion for an 10 tooth and make it 3:90?
