I am sure this must have been beaten to death already, but I searched and read and read and didnt come up with much on this specific question. I need tires and am trying to figure out which to get. Does anyone have first hand info on the Krawler and how it compares to the Irock?

Lifespan- I havent been able to find much on expected lifespan for a Krawler, and how it is compared to an Irok. My impression is that Iroks don't last very long. Are the Krawlers any better or worse?

Size- It looks like I will only be able to get the Krawler in a 35' (I've got widened stock Cruiser rims that I don't want to give up), though I was hoping for 36 or 37's... Iroks come in all the size flavors I am looking for.. If the Krawler is better than the Irok, I would run the 35".

Traction- My (soon to be SOA) 40 only sees moderate around town driving, but is driven to the trails. Mostly Sierra (Rubicon) wheeling, but also some non rock garden trails like CC Camp and Hollister.

What would you do?

thanks!
Dustin

Krawler = $$$$, IROK = $.....IMO, for any minor loss in offroad performance, the price makes up for it, as does the additional size/rim options. I've watched both in action, but never side-by-side....

Looking forward to how well the IROK's hook up myself next week, and planning a direct comparison between the IROK's and the new PitBull Rockers in the next few months too.

I am going to test out my 35" Krawlers for the first time this next week. They are very tall and wide for 35's. More "true" in measurement than I have seen with Swampers.

I run IROKs on my other rig and I can tell you the tread is super soft and it hooks up fantastic.

I would look into IROKs. YOu can buy 2 sets for the price of one set of Krawlers....

shaweet! Can you post up when you have time? Seeing how you own both, and are a pretty darn qualified person to rate these, your opinion would be appreciated. :D
Youre both right about the cost. But if I could get one set of Krawlers to last as long as a set of Iroks, then the cost factor isnt as big a deal for me, though I have to admit I was pretty suprised how F'n much tires are! been along time since I ran anything other than BFG AT and MT's. And the Krawlers are cheap compared to some other tires I don't think I would ever consider... Its crazy world we live in..

I would think that the krawlers woudl have about the same longevity as the IROK's..

dont forget that iroks come in radials too... i hear good things. i cant wait to hear comparison between iroks krawlers and pitbulls.

What tires are more expensive that Krawlers? From what I've seen they are some of the most expensive tires available, unless you're looking for something in the 44"-49" range. Maybe you're in a different market than I am. Just curious, Luke

the Nitto's, Xterranes in a 37 are $390 at 4wheelparts wholesalers, and some others..
I'm not saying theyre not spendy, I was just sprised to learn that theres some even more spendy ones out there.

Well, not a head-to-head comparison, but the Krawlers HOOKED UP on the family Crawler this last week at the Roundup. I am very impressed and they were only aired down to 12#

I saw my rig do things that similarly equipped rigs could not do without a "bump" or momentum.

Good tires.

head to head trail riding .. not just on west coast rocks i think the iroks are way better. I have 39x13.50x17 iroks and my freind has 39x13 comp compound krawlers. my tires worked way better in the dirt / mud hills than his did. the only thing i believe the krawlers accell at are on dry rocks.

Not that "they" know everything, but for what its worth, I spoke to the guys at 4wheel parts, and they all think the Iroks are a much better tire. Especially the radial. Said they'll probably last 35k miles if youre lucky, but to expect about the same with the krawlers. Also said that the extra money you pay for the radial Iroks is worth the extra mileage you get out of the tires. Said the bia-ply just dont last long if you drive them on the street.

They will also sell you BFgoodrich mud terrains, but when you pick up your truck it will have Procrap M/T's on it. And then they tell you they are at least as good, if not better. Load of BS

Actually had this happen to a friend...

I would not listen to a word that comes out of any sales rep at 4wheelparts.

I wish manufacturers would list the durometer of their tread compounds.

I was also impressed by the performance of Orion when I drove it at Round up.

On Topic: I have looked at both as well and will be going with the Irok's. The Krawlers work but not for the value of the buy in cost. Also I want a tire bigger than 35"!

get the iroc's best performing tire for the money. The bias were round and rolled well. Crawlers suck in the snow and mud.

i run some 35" krawlers now and they are by far some of the bes tires out there. especially for our west coast rocks and loamy dirt. sure the cost is high, when i got mine the were installed for four of them for $1200cdn.
they are now up to $500cdn each up here.
i may look into a set of the 42" iroks next but only cause i can't afford the big krawlers. so my 2 cents are, krawlers first, iroks second!

IROKS for sure.
