Knuckle rebuild question? fishing scale???

I am reading about using a fish scale for knuckle rebuild and have seen pics on a rebuild thread but dont understand what I will be using for? Is that the preload? any certain pound scale I need to buy?

Yes, you are measuring the knuckle pre load. My '75 fj40 FSM states 3.9 - 5.0 lbs. Yours may be different. Any $5 fish scale from Walmart will do fine.

Remove the tie rod...put the hook of the scale in the hole on the knuckle arm & read the scale as you pull gently/smoothly. If not within specs. adjust by removing/adding shims...in equal amounts...top and bottom.

The wiper assemblies cannot be on the rear of the knuckle housing, or the knuckle bearing pre load will not be indicated accurately on your scale, and consequently, the knuckle bearing pre load will be off.
 
thanks fellas, it is game on with our second try this weekend, I have all the tools, moly and high temp grease, and I have the manual on PDF. take 2
