A friend of ours asked me to have a look at a '93 LandCruiser. I assume it's an '80 series (folks here don't always get the year right). It has a diesel but I don't beleive it is turbocharged.
What should I watch for and what should I tell the buyers mechanic to look for?

I know of the bearing issue with the engines. Is there other potential problems?
 
The non turbo is a 1HZ. The only real way to test them is with a compression test.
They should start easily and settle into a fast idle straight away with just a puff of whitish smoke from COLD.
In warm climates they should start easy with out glowing the plugs.

If they dont it will have fuel injection issues or worse worn out rings and valves.

The bearing issue only relates to the turbo version and can be resolved with upgraded bearings.
Those that were going to fail have probably done so by now.


Avoid anything with blue smoke.If there is alittle bit it will get worse

An engine rebuilder in oz told me most of them that die young, do so from blown head gaskets caused by coolant problems.

it could be a KZ7* series or a HZ7* series as well, no?
i have no imput to add just curious what model it might be...

I drove by, it's an '80 series. I hope to have a look tomorrow.
