Plugged Cat?

Could be water

It could be water in the fuel, add half a cup of metholated spirits to ure tank as wll as 20 or so litres of fresh fuel. Shake vehicle by rocking side to side and run motor with ure heaters turned on hot and ure fan on full. This will stop motor overheating for a short while.

These soerts of things happened to me and the above method sorted the issue out for me . I have since baught new fuel tank and sender to replace the old rusted filthy one.

Hope u post the answer to this riddle when u find it.
cheers

Another good suggestion. Grounding it won't damage it? Right now if I hook up the lead to the solenoid with the ignition on I willl hear a click. Is that it opening? Is that what I should listen for when I ground it out?

Thanks

Mine has been grounded out for a year. Works fine.

Definitely seems fuel-line related. Either something in the tank blocking the pickup at certain angles, or clogged pickup screen/filter. Have you tried running the truck and jacking up the front to see if you can recreate the hill scenario? Do that, and see if there's any fuel in the carb window and fuel filter. If not, I'd think it narrows it to a blockage of the fuel pickup.

Maybe it is something with emissions, something that starts up when she gets good and hot, but I don't think it's the solenoid - every time I pulled the lead from the solenoid connection the engine died, which implies it's doing its job.

You need to drive it with it grounded to test it fully. It has to be atleast opening like normal or you would not even be running. I would try that while driving and if that is not the problem then unhook and cap the vacuum line going to the top of the EGR valve and drive around. This will prevent the EGR valve from opening but plug the line so you don't have a vacauum leak.

Goodluck. You will figure it out. Don' worry about your broke cruiser. You can always fix it.

Today has been better. I blew out the fuel line going from the fuel filter to the tank, as well as the vent line from charcoal cannister to the tank. I also grounded the fuel cut solenoid, and went ahead and replaced the alternator (don't ask me why, I meant to do it and I was already in there). Now she's running like a champ. I ungrounded the fuel solenoid, still running great. So I'm assuming the problem was just a fouled fuel line.

Thanks very much for all your help. I was losing it.

Umm, all of that crap you blew out of the line is now back in your tank. Your problem will return.

Yeah, I just repressed the issue didn't I? A new fuel tank is in my truck's future.

I don't think the PO ever did the recall replacement. I wonder if Toyota will do that if I already have an after market tank installed.

I am sure someone has asked but have you done the fuel tank recall? You could get a new tank and hardware for free if you haven't. How about let the cruiser idle until it runs the tank dry and let your fuel filter catch all the debris at the bottom of the tank. Then fill it up some with a gas tank and do it again. Replace the fuel filters and see if that helps. Also you could drain the tank with the plug on the bottom of the tank and rinse it out good with more fuel.

I would think that they should. You might not make a big deal about the aftermarket tank when you talk to them though as they will probably do everything in they're power to try not to install one for free as per the recall.

just a 2 cent input, used to have a mate had problems similar. Turned out the tank he got had a label on the inside and the fuel disolved the glue. Every now and then when driving the sticker would be loose and suck up against the fuel pickup. When the car stalled it would float away from the pickup and everything would be ok.

or...

You don't have to "know" about the status of the tank....;) just play  and ask if your VIN has had the tank recall performed. Toyota pays the stealership to do it, they don't care who signs the check.

That's kind of hilarious. It definitely feels like it's something like that - from nightmare to running better than ever after just running a little air through the fuel hose.

Yeah, I suppose most normal people wouldn't give their fuel tank a second thought and wouldn't know aftermarket from stock...but how many people that own these trucks are normal?

I had a very similar problem with my VW Jetta and it was so random it just nearly drove me crazy. But it slowlygot more and more consistant. Somebody online finally suggested that it might be an ignition--grounding issue. Located all the grounding points, took them loose, cleaned and retightened and the problem went away.

Fuel tank recall? Sorry, hate to sound like a nüb but my 60 is new to me and so are its issues.

Do a search. There was a safety fuel tank recall and they will replaces the tank. You can call Toyota and give them your VIN and find out if it has been done.
