When I bought my LC, I got no remotes to lock/unlock the doors. What I have is a small red LED to the left of the steering wheel. I also have (now removed) a siren under the hood with the wires cut. What I am guessing is that the PO had something put in aftermarket, then when it was sold, it was taken out. In all of that, the original remotes are absent and I'm stuck using the key.

Did the 97 LC originally come with keyless entry? How would one tell it this one had it? I have looked under the dash and the wiring seems to be in good shape, so who ever "ripped" the aftermarket system out did a good job.

I am trying to determine what I have and what I need before I go and have a system put on the truck. A Viper system with remote start is about $400 installed :o!

Thanks!!

Trace the LED wires back to the 'brain unit' of the alarm. If you still have the brain you can read the model and number off of it.

If the brain is gone (probobly) you need everything.

Mine came with the Toyota security system but I have no remotes as well. Anyone know where I can get one and how much they cost?

What a trip streepuppy, I was just talking about this no less then 5 minutes ago with my brother. Come to the forum and you had posted this.

My first purchase from C-dan was key fobs for the toyota alarm system, about $30 a piece.

I bot my first one thru a stealer at about $90, I bot the second on ebay for $12 used. If I had known CDan could get 'em cheap I would have just got 2 through him!!! If you have a copy of the window sticker it will tell you if you got keyless from the factory -

I got ZIP with the truck when I bought it. But it is in GREAT shape, so I am not really complaining.

I'm pretty sure the "brain" is gone and I will have to go the aftermarket route.

On 80's the security brain is generally under one of the front seats. My 94 is under my ugly butt on the driver's side. Beyond that, I'm generally clueless. Fobs do wear out as well. In 10 years, one fob is just about toast despite a new battery and playing with the contacts inside the fob. The second one is beginning to display similar 'issues'. $30 for OEM isn't bad and I know somewhere on this board there are instructions on programming the things as well.

I went and looked mine is under my a$$ as well. Stresspuppy, if you need instructions on how to program the new fobs let me know. The PO left the instruction booklet in the glove box.

I guess I will go look under the seat and see if there is anything there.

Was there a difference between having just keyless entry and having KE with an alarm??

Back in a few minutes.........

Nothing under the drivers seat. Guess mine didnt have it.

So, I guess Viper it is..................

Did you look under the PS seat? Kinda remember posts about some being there. Worth a 5 second look b4 plunging in the $$$.

I'll look under the PS seat and in the DS kick panel, but I am not hopeful.

Assuming the worst, has anybody had experience with Viper in the LC? How about with remote start? Is it worth the extra $$?

If you live in an extreme type of climate, the remote start is worth every stinkin' penny.

You don't know how many times I wish I had that in the winter- here in Iowa it gets pretty darn chilly in January.

Puppy,

Need an alarm with keyless entry as well (wife insists it will make it easier to put our baby in the cruiser, and I agree). Why Viper? What model? Did you compare at all? I put a Clifford in my MGB, keyless was not an option- that's my only experience. Appreciate hearing about any research you've done as I proceed down the path of overanalizing yet another minor purchase..... ;-)

thanks,
tony

sacto,

Viper seems to be THE alarm, although the company that makes it also makes other brands as well (Python for one). It just seems to be the standard. Better known, more add-ons for later if you want/need them, etc. Most alarms seem to run in the same range, so why not go with the one that is known and trusted.

The one I am looking at is the 560XV which has keyless entry, alarm, starter kill and remote start. If you jump up to the 791XV, you get 2 way communication between your handheld unit and the "brain". Uses an LCD to let you know what doors are open, if the car is running, etc. Pages you up to 1/2 mile away if your alarm goes off so you know it is happening.

Check out www.directed.com for the various lines. On the left is a Viper logo you can click on.

This is not to say others aren't good too. There is CodeAlarm, CrimeGuard (www.crutchfield.com) and others. Viper is just the one I have always known about.

The struggle for me is whether to install it myself or have someone do it for me. I like to do as much myself as I can, but at some point, my time is more valueable than the experience.

If you have any info, or do any research, please share. I am not in a rush to do something, so extra info would be great.

DOH!!! Silly me. Directed Electronics makes the following "Brands":

Viper, Clifford, Rattler, Python, Valet, Hornet, Avital, Sidewinder, Wasp.

They also make:

Precision Power, Orion, Directed Audio, xTreme, a/d/s/, Viper Audio, Directed Video.

Talk about DIVERSIFIED!

Keep this thread going, I'm in the same boat with my new 80 and would like to hear your experiences. To aftermarket or not to aftermarket, that is the question!

Hellooooooo, anyone done any aftermarket alarmin' yet? The wife's puttin' the heat on me...
