Just a warning.. I broke the plastic part of the key when I tried starting the other day.. It was a rather new key.

I discovered that the screw that holds the plastic halves together had dropped out and I didn't notice. When you try and use the key with the screw missing, the plastic around where the key is molded on will break.

I was left with just a little "T" sticking out of the ignition, but the cruiser was running.. I drove home and was able to turn it off and discovered what cause the problem..

I think the engine will start if you just have the plastic part of the key near the dash... as long as the transponder is near the control box..

Happened to me as well. That is why I do not use the master/remote key anymore. Well that and it is too damn big to put in your pocket.

The remote/key combo is poorly designed and no parts are available from toyota to fix it. If you get to the point of replacing the whole unit I recommend talking to cdan about replacing it with a Camry style separate remote and key. Keeping the screw tight will make the fob last longer.

This looks like a good fix, (pulled this from another thread)
I’m waiting to hear form Shotts on how it worked; he said he was going to order one.

EASY FIX! MY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS ENDED YESTERDAY. Here's what I did, based on forum info (THANKS GUYS!):

Key broke
Bought a key shell on eBay for $25.00
Swapped inside guts into the new shell
Took the shell and my key code to Toyota
They cut the eBay key for free
Cost ot me....$26.00 ($25 +$1 shipping)

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE!!! :)

Was it a Toyota part or aftermarket ? I'll be getting myself one of these soon.

when the dealer cut it for you, did they give you the disclaimer about not being responsible if the cut is no good? on two occasions (diff makes, diff dealers) i've given "my" blanks to the dealer and they've screwed up the cut and the keys were no good. their mistake on my dime.

won't be doing that EVER again. these new fangled keys are waaay too expensive to eat someone else's learning curve.

Not at all, though he did mumble when walking away....."I hate cutting these things, they're so expensive". Key works.

Thanks John, I’ll be ordering one soon!
How close does it look to the original?

Just wanted to mention that Rocket-Keys also carries the Lexus version for the "same great low price" of $25.

Also, I believe the 98-00 LX470's have the long blade version and the 01-05 have the short blade.

I drilled out the holes of the case & key and inserted through a slightly larger stainless steel flat-head machine screw and lock nut. Then ground the nut off just abit to reduce the profile. Works great...

Also, seen this on Ebay... Item number: 7990385198

My key case cracked today.. it still functions.. I've tapped it for now until I get back home.. I've checked out the shells on ebay (rocket-keys & mykeyless).. The ones I've seen on ebay include a panic button.. my key does not have one (only lock and unlock)..

did anyone come across one of those on ebay or any online store?

Isn't there some way to defeat this high tech mess?

My 99 factory master key has a panic button. Maybe just a US option.

I have broken mine twice, second time I used super/krazy glue. So far it has held up. I also make sure to hold the key at the base when starting.

@LonghornCruiser
mine is a 2004 and it doesn't have a panic button.. I'm almost sure that I don't have the anti-theft/alarm system which would explain not having the panic button.. most cars here come without such options since car theft is not a big issue.. recently, it seems that it is starting to become an issue though.. mostly breaking the glass and stealing cell phones etc..
