In my quest to pile more things on this poor Cruiser we’re moving from a canoe into tandom kayaks. Our kids are old enough now to paddle and big enough to easily capsize the canoe so Santa brought us 2 Crescent Crew kayaks. Even though they are 4 feet shorter than my canoe they will not go on the roof as easily. With the 20% REI coupon out I’m eying racks. I have never put 2 yaks on a roof before but it looks like I’ll have to use a rack that allows them to sit on their side. This would be for 3-4 camping trips a year where my hitch is occupied by our camper. I have a trailer for the local area and won’t need the roof for those days.

Each kayak is 80 lbs, is this even possible for the roof weight limit? Shamefully, I don’t even know that spec.

What are yall using with success?

Something collapsible that would allow me to park in the garage would be a major plus.

I looked at one of those assisted lift racks (Thule Hullavator pro) and I’m open to that but they add more weight and require a few inches of hang over from the roof rack which is something I believe I can accommodate by modifying some Dissent awning brackets (see pic). This may be more trouble than it’s worth or just be too much added weight.
