I've been through going from Esclante to Bullfrog Marina on Lake Powell, via the Burr Trail and Capitol Reef. There aren't many side trails, as I remember.

From Boulder to Bullfrog there are only 2 or 3 side roads. From Escalante to Boulder however, there are about 50 or 60. you can wander pretty much anywhere you want North or South from Highway 12 until Boulder. From there on you're pretty limited.
