Got back to work on the trailer new years day, my son and one of his friends came over to help flip it back on it's wheels after doing the springover.
Next was cutting out the tailgate

I reinforced the tailgate with 1"x1" 14ga. and the bed with 1"x 2" 14ga. tube. After that started mounting the hinges.

Then today completed more welding and a lot more grinding then mounted the tailgate.

I like that look. How are you going to lock it in the up position?

I'm thinking about going to a junk yard and seeing if I can find some old style tailgate latches. Or one thing I'm planning on doing is to build a cover for it and have that lockable and maybe place the latches on the inside. Still bouncing around different ideas.

looks good, i'm debating on cutting in a tailgate myself. i think it would be a little more user friendly that way.

can i ask about your hinges?
who's are they? and where did you get them?

tailgate latches

finally got back to work on the trailer. I kept looking into what kind of latch to use for the tailgate. I finally decided on going with something old school and started looking for some 45 tailgate latches. As you guys know they don't exist, except for the passengers side. After explaining to my son that his old man had not gone totally nuts I got him to order me 2 pasenger side latches. After about 3 hrs. today I converted one into a drivers side. Attached are some pics of the transformation. I'm sure that someone else had done this before.

here's a couple more pics after I got it welded up and installed. I ended up making the catch also.

Now THAT is cool. Where did you order the latches?

From Toyota, I got my son to get them for me. He's a tech at a Toyota dealer.

Got back to work on the trailer the past few weeks and I've got it just about ready to go. Here's a pic of it after I sprayed on the rust bullet. The other 2 are after I shot the color and started installing the roof rack for the roof top tent.

Here's a couple pics of it hooked up to the 40 with the tent on it . I've got to get new rubber on it and a few minor things done and she should be ready to go.

Looks good behind the 40... Any reason for the tent being so far forward on the rack?

Did you weld on both barrel hinges in the same direction (as in to be able to remove the tailgate in one direction)?

I had the same idea for the latches for my M101CDN. I finally got some old winshield latches and catches off of a 60's model fj40. I am going to mount them just like the 70's model toyota pickup. The way I will mount my latches they will pull / hold the rear of the trailer together for strength. My windshield latches are a little different than the tailgate latches. They pull aginst the catch and lock down. Great job on your trailer. I will have to steal your idea for the rear lisence bracket. I have that same bracket off my 73 fj40 sitting in my shop. I updated to the newer 2 light LC bracket for my 40.

Set it up that way so I can use part of the rack for a cooler if I wanted to.

Sure did. Only problem that I had is they got a little out of line and it takes a bit of work to get it off. I also tapped them and installed grease fittings.

excellent job on the trailer!
