I'm just about to go on long trip for the holidays and my 1996 just threw a P0401 code for the first time. Is this the kind of code I can ignore for a few thousand miles or will it burn up something under the hood and leave me stranded?

Pretty sure that's to do with a blocked EGR system? If that's the case, it's quite possible your intake manifold will be choked up with soot too and you car is running rich, underpowered and using more fuel than normal. Not ideal before a long trip and could result in some overheating also.

I bought a 96 1KZ-TE motor off some guy for my bus and removed all the EGR system altogether with no negative effect. However the throttle body and intake manifold were slightly different to the non-egr 1KZ-TE, so I swapped them over as well, as I couldn't be bothered going through the process of working it all out. All ran perfectly fine without it and no check engine light on the dash because of the removal. So EGR delete is the best option if you can.

Otherwise, you could attempt to clean it out yourself. I've never tried this but have a rough idea of what to do. Remove your intercooler (or crossover pipe if you dont have one) and look down the throttle body to see what condition its like in there. That will quickly tell you what you're dealing with. If it looks relatively clean in there (other than lite oily residue on the walls), the blockage will be between the exhaust manifold and the throttle body. You might be able to remove the EGR return pipe that runs from the back of the exhaust manifold, along the firewall into the throttle body/intake manifold, and give that a good soak in a shallow bath of petrol or something to break all the tar like soot down and flush it out. I haven't done this before myself but if EGR delete isn't an option, that is what I would do. While that pipe is off, you might be able to spray some HD degreaser or petrol in a spray bottle into the back of the EGR valve where there will be more of that tar like crap built up. Give it a good scrub with an old tooth brush. Hopefully that's enough to sort the problem out. Worst case scenario, the intake manifold is chockaz with soot and the whole lot needs to come off and be cleaned.

Good luck mate! Hope this is helpful. Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the info. I live in California for the delete option is not available to me. I'll give it a try doing some cleaning to see if that makes a difference. I'll also check all the vacuum hoses to make sure there isn't a leak there either.
