Hey y'all,

Just got an offer for a position at RTP in North Carolina. What's the situation like for club events, get togethers and off-roading venues in this part of the country?

Hailing from my home club, Gotham City Land Cruisers, based out of NY.

Hello,

You just hit me up on your forum as I'm hoping to move up to the Drum area.

The NC area (specifically RTP area) is the Mecca as far as numbers of active members in NC. Probably one of the more active groups in the country and growing fast.

Compared to what I've seen posted up on your forums this one is 10x's the size and equally in reference to the number of events held. It would be a wise choice (land cruiser wise)

Johnny--

The bulk of our club membership is in the greater Raleigh Durham area (the triangle). The club is a great group and very family oriented. We are good for at least a half dozen scheduled wheeling trips a year and several non-club sanctioned spur of the moment lets go wheelin trips as well per individuals schedules. Also the club gets together as needed and during most warmer weather months for a HAMON (help a member of the month) wrenchathon day to help members with their projects. We are shy on lots of wheeling opportunities around the area. The beach would be 2 hours away from you for the lazy dayz of wheeling and the mountains 3-5 in the other direction offer great outdoor rec. opportunities and some FSR exploring but not as many recognized trails systems as we would like. Our other opportunities have been recently reduced to mostly one OHV area; Uwharrie mountains. Its a good system, a bit small but provides good entertainment and a great intro to those newbs.

Good news is you can be in 4-5 states within 5 hours of RTP so interaction with other clubs is easy and you have a few clubs' schedules to pull from for planning the "Big" trip for the year.

im sure others will chime in here shortly. As well in the last year there have been two other yanks looking to move to the area and they posted threads with some good intro info to the area. I believe one was Rabid, and I do not recall the other.

Keep us posted on your status and remember, the 60 will rust much slower here :D

great location...

That area is a great location. Like Jason said a few hours in any direction and theres tons of stuff to do. Most of the members are n the raligh/durham area. I'm at the coast. Good luck and we look forward to you joining the club

I work in RTP at Cisco. We have a couple of members at other RTP companies (I'll let them share the comp. name if they want). We have a good group of folks. Looks like you are pretty young (unless your '06 is misleading), most of us are in our mid 30's give or take a few years.

I love it here. Some pretty good music in the area too. I Went to NC State and never left the area.

This place sucks... we are all a bunch a douches ;)

No this IMHO is one of the best clubs in the country. We have grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years and have members all over NC as well as a few in SC. We have at least one thing planed a month as well as many unsanctioned side trips.

I don't live in Raleigh so I can't comment too much about it, but I do like it when I go up there to visit friends from the clubs.

I'm not sure what kind of music you like but I know they have a lot of blue grass up that way. Not really my cup of tea as I like Hard Rock but if you like blue grass hit up Ramon or Greg in the area. If you like Hard Rock hit up Brian in the area. If you like anything else, i'm not sure who you should talk to :grinpimp:

There are plenty of things to do and we have a very family oriented club that accepts anyone as one of our own if they want to be.

We currently have two major events going on this year. The STR at the outer banks in April and Cruising the Carolinas at Uwharrie in September.

Oh yeah there are people still in their twenties in the club also.

Harlan is also not too far off to the NW and Coal Creek is about the same distance to the West.

Sounds like moving down there is going to be a blast!!! I had hoped that this region was like Lexington, KY when I lived there. Tons of guys in the area, lots of wheeling events, good outdoor activity opportunities, etc. Definitely sounds like this will be a good place to live.

Mtweller, I will be working for Cisco at RTP, so I guess we'll be co-workers,

Thanks again guys, I'm getting really excited. It looks like I'll be down there by the first week of June.

With the name of your truck the way it is, you'll fit in real well!

We're going weeling in URE in June, come on out! It's only about a 2 hr drive west...

Look forward to meeting you when you arrive!!! Feel free to reach out if you need any help before your move, or if you come down for housing trips or whatnot - I hear a few members of the club like a beer or 2 or 10.

Johnny, that's cool man. What role will you be taking? Do you know which building you will be in?

 I agree, I think I'll fit right in. I may be able to make that trip to URE, but can't be sure until closer to the move.

I'm going to be a CSE, but I don't know anything else at this point. How big is the campus?

Pretty big - 12 buildings. I think there are about 5-6K here at this site. I have CSEs working on the same floor as me and I work directly with some in the HTTS. I'll explain my role sometime over some beers - lemme' know if you are headed this way for a visit or anything.

I talked to some of the other guys that I'm gonna be working with and apparently I'm going to be in building 12. Do you work in that building?

We'll definitely get together at some point. I've gotta practice my grilling technique so that'll be a good excuse to drink a few beers:p

Still looking for a 60 tub ?

Not right now. I'm going to throw a frame at Moonshine first and weld the body up. I like leaning into stuff with the truck so I want to keep the body I've got, at least for now. I'll let you know if I decide I want yours though, thanks!

So where should I find a place to live? Looking for a small-ish place where I can put a grill outside, have a decent kitchen to cook in and a garage to wrench on my 60 and store some toys. Any recommendations?
