Well I started about a month ago looking around, thanks to an''88 62 I found on my work route. I shelved that idea at the time. I've been lurking at that forum for a while. It's a long story, but driving a company Liberty 4x4, combined with some serious weather here, got me more interested in 4wd. I decided this week to look past the 62. While there are some LC's a bit farther away, I've found two LX candidates close to home- a 450 and a 470. Today I checked out the 470 in a semi detailed fashion, but will get more into it if I decide on it. not deciding anything yet- the 450 looks to be a good candidate as does this one. I do want to look at it and maybe a few of the LC's before I do anything final.

My uses for this truck? I have a company car for all my commuting and route work, it's good for personal use, gas included, so I use it 98% of the time. Pop is 80, and I don't think he'd be a fan of my manual everything '69 GMC and "64 Karmann Ghia, so I want something for him to drive when he's up this way visiting. Anyway the truck should have a low milage easy life- although I do intend to take over all sorts of surfaces up the hills and down the hollers most all the year :D

Here are some particulars:

199K miles- bone stock truck, around $8K negotiated.

Interior complete and well cared for- no flaws I could see. Clean but not detailed- no rips, scratches, soft leather, etc. didn't check all the power goodies, but the ones I did were fine.

Exterior almost perfect except for two small paint scrapes- one on the bumper, one on the edge of driver's side rear view mirror. Proviso: Appeared rust free, but didn't really get down and dirty to look, just careful eyeballing- no damage or visible overspray though.

Mechanically the seller demonstrated most all features. Only one missed was the CDL/4Lo ( but I can check that later). The suspension goodies- auto level control, height control , ride control all work fine. Power and 2nd gear start work. I could go on- the upshot is the gizmology appears to be just as it should be. Engine compartment- again clean, not detailed.

Test drive- The truck felt like had a tenth or less of the miles it has, It's screwed together nicely- solid and quiet. Engine was great, plenty of power- no smoke I could see or smells. Tranny shifted nicely. It was all very smooth. did well in subdivision and on the highway. I'm pretty particular, but I have to say this is the best test drive of and used car I've had (I'm my 50's by the way). Impressive.

As far as the expendables, the truck has a recent brake job with ceramics. recent Yokohama (apparently) stock size tires as well. He does all his own PM, but has a favorite Lexus dealership mechanic who checks it out periodically- not sure he's had to fix it much if at all though.

Owner has an on call, any weather, 24/7 job- this is his usual work car. I saw a special plate on it, so I don't think it's a tale.

This is what comes to mind right now- do ask if I've left something out.

I get a really good vibe from this beast- but second opinions are not just welcome, but needed.

Sounds like a winner to me. Check the tilt telescope functions and further inspect the rust. If all is well I'd go for it.

One other thing... You can register on the Toyota site with the VIN and get all the dealer based Service records... Probably the same for Lexus!

Carfax would have some of the aftermarket records also if you were concerned about maintenance.

I had found out the timing belt was done that way on our 100... From the Toyota Owner site.

@bctlex- a hat tip and thanks much! It's the same one, I'm sure. Obviously the price dropped a bit. You know what the weather was like today, so this trip was a "proof of concept"- would I fit/like it. It's true that when something is 17 years old stuff won't be 100%- I just want be sure it's not the expensive stuff that's bad.

It's still on the list, but that 450 has had a lot done on it with lower miles, and it's less complex. I like to have at least three choices, unless I just come across something extraordinary. As it's been said many places here, the right combination of things makes the best choice.
