Bill and Glenn,

Spoke with Steve yesterday @ his shop, and he's undecided about the Whipsaw trip. If you guys are meeting to discuss a July long wknd. trip would you mind if I attended? I haven't been to any of the locations mentioned. I'm definitely ready to go for the long weekend, I have the 2nd - 5th off.

Glenn, you're right, the Summer is way too short.

Rough plan

I can come over Wed on the 8:00 am ferry and meet you guys somewhere in the valley. I will talk to Bill on Monday. My vote is to go somewhere warm and dry.

Well , I running wednesday. I am booking off Friday .

message slightly incomprehensive (as usual) – are you coming on Wed?

I'm shutting the shop for Friday. We're we going?

OK, I'm back in town. I just talked to Glenn from Victoria. He is meeting me at Ricky's in Chilliwack for lunch at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, July 1. We are expecting to go to Placer Lake near Princeton and explore around there. We are open to other suggestions if anybody else has a better idea. We are hoping that Aaron and Mike N will join us, as well as anyone who also might be interested.:steer::D

What CB channel will you be yacking on. I may be going by and be able to raise you from near the top of Sunday Summit.

I'm not off until thurs. and have some tie rod ends to replace before I head out. Not sure where Placer lake is. Are you guys staying there? I still don't have the CB instal'd so I can't even try to contact you once I'm in the area. Is anyone going on Friday instead?

I have to work until Friday evening. I was thinking of going up Sat or Sunday to do some stuff at my mom's. It is very easy to get to Placer Lake. On hwy 3 you go past East Gate (end of the 4 lane east bound) and the Similkameen Falls. Turn off at onto the FSR at the hairpin before going up Friday Creek Hill: 49°11'17.24"N; 120°32'55.03"W (more or less). You can see it on Google Earth. You will cross over the river. I can't seem to find the GPS coordinates. Anyways, here are two write-ups which may help.
BC4x4.COM four wheel drive, 4x4, offroad and fourwheeling site.

Isn't there a big sign of sorts with a gravel road on your right, at the bottom of a downhill stretch with a hairpin turn, as you head east towards Princeton?

That's it. Also, there are the Trapper Lakes up there also. I found them on google earth but not placer.

From the top of Sunday Summit going west you will find Garrison Lake. Use to be well known for good fishing and lots of bears. It was a 15 minute easy hike in from the road. There also use to be a few plywood boats hidden in the bush not far from the lake.

Since I failed to go to Rubithon,[STRIKE] I did my best Disney puppy dog eye impression on the wife[/STRIKE], and I might just be able to head out Friday and camp over night.
or was it Saturday, I forgot already.

I couldn't bring up a decent map on my Garmin software, but I did find this map of the area on the net. Glenn says that you go past the East Gate of Manning Park, and turn right at the second road going to the right. I guess you follow Placer Creek until you get to Placer Lake.

Coastal Cruisers radio frequencies for July 1 Placer Creek, Placer Lake area:
CB channel 4
Coastal Cruisers VHF trail chatter 146.4000
Manning Park amateur repeater 147.0600+
Manning Park ambulance 138.3750
Princeton Fire Dept 151.1450
Ambulance Repeater 142.0950
R.C.M.P. repeater 139.4100 (THEY DON'T LIKE YOU USING THIS UNLESS ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY!)

No problem Bill. If you do the traverse, it'll be unlikely that I or anyone else will raise you on the CB when you go over the summit. Have fun. Looks like it will be excellent weather. You might look up Goldboy (Simon) in Hedley. He and his wife have a B&B by the Colonial Inn B&B. Their place is the old mine office building by the remains of the stamp mill. Just look for the Cruiser and the old Chevy. He just got ARB lockers installed that i am sure he is looking to try out. He knows a few intersting trails and mines around Hedley.

Directions to Placer Lake

Quoted from 'The Four Wheeler's Companion"

Cross Manning Park on Highway 3, and continue on past the Eastgate Esso Station to the turn-off (right) in the middle if a switchback by Copper Creek Campsite. This is approximately 24,0 km from the Manning Park Lodge, 19.0 km from Eastgate (0 km).
Cross the bridge, pass the Weyerhaueser warning sign, and head up a good gravel forestry road, staying left on the main line and up three switch backs. Avoid a couple of side paths, and cross a creek bed at 2.5 km.
Continue upwards through the dry, dusty hills, around one ridge, and up another to 9.3 km. Branch right off the Placer Mountain Road, and descend the ridge.
At 11.3 km there is a junction. Either road will work The right road curves downhill past a corral, crossed the stream and then heads left to a wranglers' parking log and up to a road. Go Right.
The left fork gets you to the same spot, just beyond the wranglers' camp, via crossing Watson Creek and a couple curves above the camp. The road drops down and meets the lower road.
After the upper and lower forks have rejoined, the track becomes bump, muddy, and sometimes dusty. There isanother fork less than 1 km later. The left fork leads to a log patch. The right fork, near a blue rock, squeals between two trees and then curves left. This is the hard part.
The last couple of of kilometers to the lake are Class 6 (yeehaw). The trail tends to curve to the right, with the toughest and steepest being the first section.

This book was published in 1995, so things might have changed somewhat I would imagine.
