finally got things going on Josh's 40 (again) and I hope I can keep the momentum up to get this done and get it out to him. Elaine got out in the garage with me and helped get things organized. She even put labels on the drawers. Then Steve came by a couple Sundays ago and helped get the chassis on casters so I can move it around. I've got both the axle housings back under the springs for a spring over and now it's time to get them positioned before I tack weld the new spring perches. Now for all the geometry.

Awesome! Good Start Tom. good luck

It's about time you get working on that thing again.
Lookin good
Can you send Elaine to my house I need labels on my parts to (Hourded Junk)!

Please send Elaine over to straighten out my garage. Have her bring some food and clothes because it might take a while.

Maybe that's what I need to do. Start a garage organizing company and get Elaine to run it.

I'm sure I'll be asking questions and needing advice on this. I need to keep this as low budget as I can and recycle some of the junk I have back into it. The plan is that it will be a trail rig and won't be tagged. It sounds like CO is not as leinient as VA is when it comes to tagging a vehicle. I guess they're too close to the left coast.

come on who's garage is that really ?
Thats going to be one big 40

CO doesn't have Inspections unless you live in Nazi territories and need smog check

Unfortunatly that is one of the territories that Josh lives in. That's the main reason he got rid of the chevy pickup and why he plans on this being an untagged trail rig.

Jon came by today and we spent a couple hours tweeking the housings to get them angled correctly. With that done and them tacked I need to get them to a real welder. Right now it looks like I won't be doing a cut and turn the front end has a 4 degree rake on it.

I guess next will be putting the axles and third members back in. The thirds are set up with 4.88's and I'm debating on trimming a tooth on the ring gear to get the shaft back in since the ring gear is thicker or shaving down one edge of the shaft to get it to clear the ring gear. The later was the suggestion of the mechanic that set up the gears for me, since all the shaft seems to do is act as a spacer now since it has lockers in both diffs.

Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Grind down the ring gear. If you gring too much on the shaft, and you will to get it back in, it will not hold the locker, lock-rite, lunchbox out enough and will strip the teath off the locker... do not ask how I know this.

Thanks Rob, I would ask any questions, just follow your advise.

Thought I'd post an update and an issue. Got the new spring perches welded then Steve & Jon helped get the front end put back together. The issue I'm having is with the powertrax. It fits perfectly with no thrust washers. The 2 washers that came out are the thinnest that Toyota makes for a 40 and I only have .03" space for thrust washers if I could find paper thin ones. I've posted up in the 40 tech and got a responce from one person who said he had no issues using his thrust washers but after looking at the oics of his compaired to the one I'm installing they look like different models. The model I'm installing is not listed on richmondgears website anymore. I have sent an email to them and am waiting to hear back. All I want to know is can I run it without thrust washers without tearing things up?

by the way, one tooth was ground on each gear. Thanks for your input

Any pics? My powertrax no-slip does not come with any thrust washers at all. You may have the lockright style that does use them.

Here's a pic of it Dan, not the best. The instructions mention removing the thrust washer but doesn't mention anything about reinstalling. Like I said, everything fits within their specs I just want to make sure it's good. It's about 12yr. old, been sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

It's hard to tell by the pic, but it may be the lockright style, that I know bupkis about, and would suggest Powertrax support. If it's the no-slip, like I have, I may be able to help. Here's a poor pic of the no-slip I pulled from a powertrax brochure.

Notice the third item/ring in from the end drivers - on the right side there's a paddle sticking up, on the left, it sticks down, and shows the c-clip slot (yes, they show it back asswards for the '40). Does this look familiar?
