Jordy, this 62 is for you

yeah .25, although my dad said methenol has gone down significantly, so it is even cheaper now.

Well how much do you have in your 60 Martin? I can't see a 4runner being that much cheaper to build up. But I guess, the trucks I have now are alot easier to build (I spent a s***load of cash on my truck when I first got it cause I didn't know anything about cruisers) cause I do have a lot of spare parts and such, but Jordy does have Gary to help him out.

You all raise good points, I have thought of buying a cheap car, for commuting, but really, Im not really a car person, I want to be able to head out on the weekends and have fun. It doesn't really matter the mechanical condition of whatever I buy, because I am somewhat mechanically inclined, and I always want to learn. having taken Automotive class throughout highschool, and I am starting automotive in BCIT soon. The major problem for me, is rust, I don't really care about body rust, because I can patch that up. All I really want is a Landcruiser with a decent frame, and a running engine with not too many KM's.

Ah, you aren't asking much, a lower kilometre cruiser with a good frame. High maintenance like your uncle, I see. :D

Jordy, doesn't Gary still have a crusty old 42 stored out back? It's way easier to find a 40 series with solid frame locally than a 60 (when on a low budget).

Parking a 40 in town is not that bad. Insurance is in line with getting a commuter car. Regular service is more expensive. The 40's aren't so good at not fogging up in the rain so visibility in traffic is suprisingly bad for about half the year. Patching a 40 body is easier than a 60. Trouble is even the really rough BJ40/42's seem to hold value, FJ40's are cheap though.

Deny, my BJ60 has been fairly cheap, I haven't kept that good track of it but I'm probably around $4k total invested. Mechanically it's fine and has ~260k on it, but it is very rusty. Buying a beater 60 is the easy part. Then you catch up on maintenance, do some mods cause a stock 60 sucks to wheel, then worry about a VI ruining your day because the rust makes the thing an eye sore. You can buy a partly built mini truck for less than the cruisers go for, also have to watch for rust issues. Or if you want to build yourself for cheep, spring over samurai, drop a VW tdi under the hood, low gears for the t.case, weld the diffs, go wheeling. I still like cruisers better though.

Do like I did, patch up the bad rust, paint over the not so bad. cost me less than $100 and it looks decent enough not to get any unwanted attention from the VI issuers. probably spent like 2 or three semi weekends on it. It is a lot easier to do body work when you really don't care what it looks like, just solid and once painted clean looking.
