Hello, I'm looking to join the community, but I want to see if I'm doing this right.

Planning on buying the '09 LX570 with 308k miles on it (Link). Got a ppi happening today and probably reserving as soon as I get the news.

I have some high mileage in the stable, but this would definitely be the highest starting point. Been lurking for a few days, and I figure I should do all the fluids and probably replace the globe accumulators once I've gotten it. So I've got really just a couple questions:
1. Considering my original budget was $10k, this is really stretching for me. Is this worth it, or should I hold off till I've got the money to get a lower mileage example?
2. Does this seem like a good deal?
3. Keeping the stock rims, if I get 285/60/20, do I need any mods other than the 1"spacer (i.e. fender trimming)? I want bigger tires, but I also don't want to be cutting if I can avoid it.
 
I agree with bloc, I believe used car prices will drop dramatically and highly recommend you pass and wait a little while. Having said that, even if prices don’t drop, I would still pass and look for one much closer to 200k miles or so. Use the extra time to save up more cash. Good luck.

Or offer this dealer $10k and see if he takes it. It’s not going to be easy to sell any vehicle with over 300k miles and at auction I’m sure they paid peanuts.
 
For $20K+ you can certainly find a much lower mile example. In the $25-30K range you should be able to track down a sub 200K mile LX570.

Why a 200 series instead of, say, Tundra or Sequoia?
Looking for something that's not a truck (just not a big fan of em), that can tow at least 6k comfortably, preferably higher, and is nice on the road and on forest/service roads. Reliability is high on the list too, which took the LR3 out. Purchase budget is $10k, but we're also looking into getting a trailer that can fit two kiddos and two dogs, so we can cannibalize that a bit. If you've got a better vehicle suggestion, I'm all ears.

Damn, good point, probably not buying this (at least at the moment) specific one then. Might try giving them the $10k offer, I like that suggestion.

As far as my wrenching ability goes, I watched the video on replacing the globes and immediately thought that was something I'd like to do. I am pretty lazy, so things like oil changes go to the local shop, but interesting projects I tend to do. As long as it doesn't require a lift or expensive special tools, I'm in.

All things considered, it sounds like this isn't the opportunity for me, barring a much better price. I'm still pretty sold in the 570 overall though, so I'll probably be back soon.

Shouldn't have put a model year in the user name without having bought yet. Lesson learned.
 
Dealers doing oil changes is why so many of us have broken AC recirculate doors. If you care about a vehicle, and can do it, you should.
 
Definitely try to negotiate the price, but I think 10K is unrealisticly low. I also bought a mid-texas truck that had the hwy snot driven out of it every week by an oil field engineer. It was a private party sale, so I could do my best to establish how he cared for the truck via conversation, but whether 200k or 300k or 100k the facts are it was a 2009 (this was in 2018). It was 10 years old. There is a bunch of maintenance you'll be doing on any 10 or 13 year old vehicle, because you're taking it into places that are hard to get to, and hard to get out of, so your truck has to be reliable.

I don't think the 'extra' burden of baselining is all that different from an example 100k 13 year old truck, some stuff wears by miles, other stuff by time. The one thing I can think of is the suspension rubbers/bushings - that R&R could be $2k, and would likely be an good investment on a 300k vehicle. It is also something that doesn't have to be done 'now', it'll soldier on with a rougher ride for many more miles. The rest of the baselining you'd do out of preparation, and there would be some replacing of the usual stuff as outlined in the thread.

I saw a lower entry price as free money for the build.

For everything you said I’d go GX all the way. If my camper was 1000 lbs lighter I’d have a GX instead of my LX. I had a GX loaner for ~2 months one time when the dealer (while it was under warranty) stripped out a drain plug. It was sportier, more fun to drive, better on trails (slightly smaller),…. And every bit a land cruiser (Prado).
 
If anyone has suggestions for places to look for good deals too, I'm lurking the classifieds here + Carfax, Autotrader, Autolist, cars.com, and Craigslist.

1st Gen (specifically 05-07) Sequoias should be on your list if you are wanting to spend under 10k. I doubt you will find a GX460 for close to 10k (a quick CarGurus search shows the average is high teens for a 2010-2013 model). A later GX470 and 05-07 Sequoia have very similar drivetrains/tow capacities (6500ish LBS), also very similar to 100seris LC if that matters to you).

GX470s and Sequoias got the higher output 2uz-fe from 2005 until end of model cycle. They also both have the Torsen center diff for full time 4wd (new for Sequoia in 2005).

Before i bought my LX, I was in a similar position as you (shopping for a road trip SUV for < 10K) and these are what i was shopping for. I wanted a 2nd vehicle as a camping/trip vehicle to go along with my sedan, but then a LX came up for sale cheap near me locally and I switched gears and traded in my sedan for the LX. I do think the 200 series is the ultimate SUV, but i bet the GX/Seq are probably at least 75% as good and less than half the cost.

I should add, CarGurus and the classifieds here would be another good place to shop. I know someone here recently sold their high mileage (not 300k high) LX that was well cared for and probably didn't need much baselining for just over 20k.

My local dealer has a 2014 with 93k miles. Arb bumpers, rack, RTT, and awning for $82k….

My buddy just sold his 2010 LX with 73k miles for $47k to make room for the Rivian that should be here next week.

Your buddy is getting a battery powered vehicle in Alaska? Or is he located further south than you?

He is up here in AK, sold his 200 but still has a 80 on 35’s. I’m on my 2nd tesla (s, now 3) in 9 years. No problems in AK or the cold, they do great. There are a ton of EVs up here, it would be rare to stop at an intersection in Anchorage and not see at least one EV (mostly tesla).

I’m on the list for a Cyber truck and Silverado EV to retire the LX570 to a full blown off road build (on 35’s). I’ve switched to battery: chainsaws, string trimmers, lawn mower, and snow thrower. So much easier to use and store (don’t have to Sumerian/winterize) and almost no maintenance.
 
300K is lot of miles on expensive parts. Transmission, differentials and engine are all getting tired. Depending on how well it was maintained and operated is a guess. It went to auction probably after a trade-in. Most car lots do not want a 300k mile car on their lot and for good reason anybody's guess what will fail first. Transmission is probably a $4500.00 to $5500.00 repair. So get it real cheap and rust free. Look at NADA trade-in value.

Got the pii back.
Transmission is done, works, but throwing the codes to indicate it needs replacing.
Power seats don't work.
Power tailgate doesn't work
Can't shift into 4lo.
Can't shift into 4hi.
No AC.
And the list goes on.
Considering offering $2k, but I'm not sure I want to put in the work. I'd basically be buying an engine and frame...and at this point I question both of those.
 
Not sure how it can't shift into 4HI when it's in that full-time!? Regardless, if it has all of those issues I would walk away. First Gen Sequoias are cool but finding one that doesn't have 300K+ on the odometer is going to be difficult as well.
 
That first Gen looks like a winner.
