The 4.0 liter is a good motor. I have a Cherokee with 250,000 miles on it and it runs good. Seriously. Its my work thrasher/daily driver, that gets around 18 to 22 miles to the gallon. My brother has a 4.0 liter heep tj Rubicon and that thing is like cheating when its off road! He has 35" Toyos and it goes down the road at 75 no problem. I think the purists here on mud, the guys that avoid the highways, should wake up and get a motor that will rev when needed. Some people want to drive there rigs not trailer them!

i had one with 300 ,000 miles on it , it still ran like a top . i would get a sbc because your going to see better millage with it and more power . my 4.0 got bad millage for the power , 22 mpg is a lie a dirty lie . 18 mpg is pushing it i have owned 3 cherokee's two auto's and a 5 speed 1998 , none ever got that kind of millage .

i actually liked my 4.0 except for the bad millage , i would take it over a 4.3L chevy v6 .

if you do go the 4.0 route get a 93 or newer h.o , aw4 for a auto or nv 3550 for a manual .

it would be easy except for trying to get the t-case to bolt up im not sure if there is anything to adapt the aw4 to the landcruier case possibly something for a nv3550 . personally if you really want a 4.0 make a 4.6L stroker out of it .

or just forget it all and get a sbc , you will be happyer .

What is the point to go faster on the highway? I still do not remember having a jeep pass me on the freeway, I drive my F motor full throttle 100% of the time and never have had an issue, driven it hard for 8 hours straight in 100 deg. weather and no issues. heeps are heeps, LC'smotors are bomb proof imo and experience. SBC's are cool but for that I would buy a blazer to start with. I like all of you love my Toyota because it works and works forever and when you need to run on 70 octane gas can the other motors do that?
