Yeah I know and no it's not for me.

Got a buddy at work that, for some reason, bought a cj5 site unseen last november off of ebay. The thing looks cherry and it was claimed that everything, engine, tranny, tcase and axles had less than 3k on them.

500 miles later the engine blew. he got an atk motor and had a shop put it in. It leaked.
Got another ATK motor, leaked worse than before.
Then went through 3 jasper motors all leaking. At first he thought he was just getting bum engines but now wants to part ways with that shop and find a jeep guy that knows his stuff.

Anyone know of any guys that know jeeps like the back of their hands and likes to wrench on them. Shops, guys who work out of their house anything??

Doesn't matter where it is. Just trying to help him out before he goes crazy.

The guy's name is Tony and he just builds jeeps (on the left leaving locust on 24/27 on the way to uwharrie). Never dealt w/ him, but I've heard of good things and he's had some nasty rigs.

Cool thanks

No on tarheel, since they managed to brake my panhard last year when all they were supposed to do was put new bushings in, i'll never recommend them for anything.

i know cjs pretty well. hell ive still got my cj7, blasphemy i know. what exactly does he need help with. ive torn down a few amc motors and know them fairly well. got a bunch of parts laying around too. jeep guys are notorious for putting crappy parts in since a lot of parts are only available from china unless you know what your looking for.

as far as shops in your area i second bull gear. also obviously check nc4x4 lots of jeep guys on there in the charlotte area. best forum around for cjs is cjoffroad

cj5s are death traps. he should just by my cj7. lol (serously its for sale if anyone knows anyone interested in a cj7)

Al,

Taheel sucks, I just couldn't think of anyone else. As a Land Cruiser owner since 1989 they were the only place to get 4WD parts locally for a long time. I hated going in there. They would always have some smart ass thing to say when looking up parts for my rig. And I think they gave me lung cancer from all the second hand smoke at the parts counter, BASTARDS!

Cruizer hound. what do you drive? I havent seen ya around town.

I second that comment about the LUNG CANCER. The last time i bought something there 3 years ago i had to go home and shower because my clothes and hair smelled like i had been in a smokey bar all day. The guys at tarheel for the most part are grumpy, rude and uneducated on anything but Jeep parts.

I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow.
Right now I have a blue 1973 FJ40 that I did a frame off resto in 2001. My daily driver is a white 2000 FJZ100 with ugly goldish fender flares. Ive owned a FJ60 and 62. Between my brother and I we have owned 9 Land Cruisers.

You sound like a proper member of the club...

Is this John Larkin???!!!!!

I hate that some of you guys had a bad experience at Tarheel, but even when I wa sworking for their main competetor(4WP), they were always cool to me. Ron, Steve, and Phillip (now works elsewhere) have been extremely helpfull to me about Jeep stuff, me being a Toyota guy and all.

I definately dont care for the indoor smoking. I bet it would help their buisness a TON if they quit that.

J-Medic in Winston-Salem works on NOTHING but Jeeps!! He is located at the loop around the Hanes Mall, and I have none some guys that worked with/for him, good things to say.

CJ5 is going to be old school though, not sure about the engine leaks for those engines, and the big rebuilders (atk) could be cutting corners on gaskets/sealers? Or they could just be known for leaking, I know my dads Willys CJ2a, there are parts in there that are GOING to leak regardless (rear seal)

Did he get his problems solved?

It would be helpful to know what leaks he was having, type of engine, etc. A well built 258 I6 will not leak except for the valve cover gasket. That will only last 10k or so then it will leak. I always viewed it as rust prevention. :)
