Can anyone explain to me or post a link where I can find the difference between the A440F and the Full Hydro non Electronically Controlled A442F found on the 1991 HDJ81's?

Cheers

Anyone?

When i was looking into automatic transmissions, I came to the conclusion that all A442F's were electronic. I could be wrong.

l dont't know what are the differences between the A440 and the A442 hydraulic,l have installed extreme valve bodies in both and the valvebodies are not the same.

There are both hydraulic and electronic versions of the A442F. There are also cruise and non-cruise versions.

I haven't seen an A440F in a diesel JDM 80 series... yet.

In the gassers, yes, the A440F was there in the 80 series JDMs.

The A442F is certainly a better transmission than the A440F. The electronic version is even better again.

I know that my dads '90 HDJ81 and also a friend of mine who also has a '90 HDJ81 has the A440F in them, there must have been a cut off somewhere around late '90 early '91?

Cheers

I have an early production 1990 HDJ81 here (serial number is 000550) and it has an A442F in it.

Check that VIN tag, I am quite sure you will find an A442F in there and not an A440F.

edit 1: - I also have an HZJ73 that was one of the first produced in the 1993 model year - the VIN tag says it has an A440F in it, but it's actually an A442F electronic.
A collectible oddity perhaps?

edit 2: I only deal with VX 80 series vehicles, it is possible that lower spec units had the A440F (?)

John, I don't understand what you mean by cruise vs. non-cruise. Are you referring to the cruise control? If you are, how are the cruise controls tied into the transmission? I thought they only activated the accelerator.

Ok so somewhere along the line My dad or I must have misread something as he has the A442F in his Cruiser (HDJ81-000081 is the serial) I will double check on the other '90 my friend has.

Cheers

on some of the older HDJ81(older means 91 and not 92) that l have seen, there is an extra plug on the left side of the transmission, and is hookup to the valvebody on the inside.l don't know why,may be john would know.

what about info in reguards to a440f's gas vs diesels
i think valve body is different, and for sure the torque converter is different

what about lenght of bellhousing, and gas to diesel compatibility

A442F or A440F rebuilt kit

ok guys here a question for anyone... a couple of moths ago my cruiser burn the tranny I have a 1991 HDJ81 on the vin Tag says A442F here is the confusing stuff
when I took the car to the shop the "specialist" tells me that is a fully hydro tranny and I call his atention to the tag and tell him that this is a 442 so when I went to buy the parts i bought the rebuilt kit for a A442F then I brought the kit to the shop and this guy tells me that the kit is not right and change it for the A440F well after few days I got my car back but my over drive is slipping and now is not engaging at all I need some guidance.:crybaby:

Christoman,

That is strange, I have rebuilt three of the A440Fs and every kit that I have purchased has been for the A440/A442 and comes with all the gaskets to build for either gas or diesel versions of either tranny.

If it is slipping in overdrive, it could be either a malfunctioning shift valve that is sticking or one of the seals from the valve body to the housing got hairlipped when installing or the sealling rings on the rear of the oil pump housing aren't sealing.

In any case, the tranny will need to be torn down to find out why and I wouldn't keep driving it or the clutches in the overdrive will be worn out quickly. The overdrive clutch is the weakest one in the entire tranny with only 3 clutches and steels to hold it.

Yeah, something is definitely slipping on that tranny in overdrive.

They need to tear that back down and figure it out for sure.
I wouldn't drive it very far in overdrive or it is going to burn up those clutches and then other areas are going to overheat and have problems as well.

Hi longbow I have a 1990 80series with the full hydro A442f or really a a440f with a different belhousing it's in the transmission shop at the moment (6months now) the current status is has great reverse, no forward gears, on the lift the wheels are turning the right way but you can stop it with your hand . It has everyone scratching their heads including the two technicians who have 20+ years experience each. Valve body has been to a specialist toque converter has been rebuilt, case has been through at least six times. Any ideas???
Kind regards
Michael
