I just got my January/February TT. It has a really good article and some driving impressions from TLCA's President Alan Loshbaugh. He was with the group from Toyota that took it through the Rubicon at the end of September.

I chatted with my local dealer about it some he said that the engine will be built in the US and it is being shipped to Japan for vehicle assembly. So it will come with a J VIN.
 
Not that I wouldn't believe a dealer ;) but is the 4.0 used in the 4r built here, then shipped there for vehicle assembly? I would think Toyota was more efficient than that. Hopefully the dealer was wrong. :)
 
I have to agree with maybe the dealer was wrong. Most folks at our three local Toyota dealerships don't know much about anything.

Could you imagine the cost of shipping 40 or 50,000 engines to Japan, to be installed in FJ Cruisers, then have the completed vehicles shipped back to the US?
 
This dealer has had more factual information on the FJ than I have seen anywhere else they are very well versed in it. The salesperson I talked with actually had just been to some PNW training. FWIW, Honda has been doing the opposite for years. They have been shipping motors into the US for vehicle assembly here. I think it is highly possible that they are doing this.

But Honda is selling the vehicles here. It's amazing Toyota can justify making the motor here, ship it to Japan, then ship the completed vehicle back.
