I was wondering why Jrob didn't just do the 5.3 swap from a pull out? I guess that option just was not expensive enough for someone with deep pockets.. :-)
 
I am with Jrob...A TBI would be easier to trouble shoot. That is the way I would go. New motor...no bs. Then also no throttle by wire....i hate it on my chevy work truck.
 
I did not want a used motor. If so, I would have got one out of a truck we are about to retire. I wanted something that I know is good. A crate 5.3 with fuel injection is not cheaper, if so, find it and show me. Also revert back to previous posts, I am not interested in a high HP bouncer. I want something very dependable.
Srob's rig is also throttle body, same thing I wil have, same parts, ect.

Those are aluminum heads found them on EBay.

Go Jrob! If you Geoggled it he would suggest the TBI for simpleness. Only about 4 electrical things to replace if something goes out. Cheap and Easy to find parts too. And if one goes out you should be able to get back to camp.

I understand the reasoning. A TBI motor is a very primitive form of fuel injection, but at the same time it is very reliable and easy to fix if needed.
I've never had any issues with my TBI motor. I just wished I had a few extra HP to move my heavy a$$ junk when I need to get on it.
Crate motor is a nice option too. Just having the one piece rear main seal it worth it.
No doubt you though this through and will have a nice power plant when you're done. You planning on installing a York air compressor?

I have thought about York & a Premier power welder. However, I think I am going to put those on the back burner for right now.

No, they are not vortec heads
 
EDIT: I said Aluminum heads in a post above....I meant an aluminum intake, not heads...sorry
 
Devin put vortec heads on his tbi to flow better and has had some hell with the proraming.

I have no idea about your "proraming" nor do I want to know...
 
I really hope he meant programming!...LOL. Talking with norm at AFI I should be around 240 - 250 HP with the edlebrock intake and the programming that norm will do.

I thought with Vortec heads you really needed a true fuel injection/tuned port injection, not just a throttle body?
 
You can get by with it but the programming is more involved with a lot of data logging.
 
vortec heads have a different bolt arrangement where the intake mounts/mates. Vortec heads are a good improvement but you have to make sure you have the right intake solution to match what you are trying to do. TBI engines are very dependable as noted, I had one in older pickup that had 250K miles...only issue I had was a leaking intake gasket and the jumper wire for one of the injectors got pinched by the OEM air cleaner housing....was very trustworthy and dependable. Don't bother with the holly TBI throttle body...its not an upgrade. Stock all around would be a very dependable solution.
 
Gearheadefi.com has lots of info. Fuel pressure regulator being bumped up and STEADY, CONSISTENT pressure seems to be the keys to reliability on tuning.
