How long should they go? Search shows failure can be bad. I don't have much time these days nor a proper place to work on the truck at our temp living situation. Thinking about taking it in but worried about the local service at a dealership and no where else to go...

Sorry for hijack...

check out the condition of the boots. Check for grease getting out. Stick your head under vehicle while someone turns wheel. It should be pretty obvious where sound is coming from. I would say they go a good 100k plus miles, but if torn, they degrade quickly. A reboot kit runs about $40. I'm sure a dealer will get a good $200 per side, total guess though.

My squeak went away for about half a day. I thought it was brakes, so yesterday I put some lube on the pads and rotors. No dice. The squeak only happens when turning left, either slightly left or significantly and at all speeds. The faster I am going down the road, the faster squeak is. It is definitely a rotational squeak and is worse immediately after braking. Just haven't been able to diagnose where it's coming from. And to top it all off, I think I have the dreaded clunk in the front end too. I hear that with brakes being applied.

Have you wiggled the dust shield? I've had stuff stuck behind and only made sounds while turning one way or the other.

That will be what I do next. Gotta try to find some time to get I done. And someone mentioned the shims on the brake pads...not to sure where those are, but I might do that too. It's a pretty loud squeal now.

The shims keep the pads from rattling around and touching the rotor. The tabs like to break off after a while and when you turn the pad can simple lay on the rotor. You can't tell while driving, but sometimes the pad and shim touch and make noise.

Got under the truck yesterday with the skid plates off. Turns out the popping sound I have been hearing is more than likely the bushings on the steering rack are bad. The whole friggin cylinder wiggles back and forth when the steering wheel is moved back and forth. A search on fixing that yields what looks like a PITA, but that is back burner for the squeak. I am about to probably go screw my truck up and try to peel back my CV boots and shove some grease in there. With the amount of bad looking grease being slung out from under the straps, I am pretty sure this is where the squeaking is coming from. The other day I grease the U-joints and drive shaft slip joint and the squeak went away for about half a day. Could it really be the slip joint on the drive shaft making that squeak?

Sounds like you have like 5 different things going on. Step back and fix one at a time. Just throwing grease and lube on stuff may not really help unless you can figure out what is wrong.

Yeah, I just redid the clamps on the passengers side CV's. I Also used a marinade injector to squeeze a friggin bunch of CV joint grease in both boots. The inboard boot I peeled all the off and wiped as much of the REALLY runny grease as I could out. Didn't have any brake cleaner around. Then I clipped the sharp point off the injector, squeezed some joint grease in there and injected grease all into the CV joint itself. Well as much as I could with it all still put together and on the truck. On the outboard side I just pryed the boot back a little and squeezed in as much I could until the bad grease was bleeding out. I used ALOT of grease. I got a little less than 4oz into the outboard boot. I bet I got about 8 oz. into the joint and boot on the inboard side. Hopefully that isn't too much! At least I got all the clamps changed out so when I have a full day and plenty of brake cleaner, I can douche out the joint good.

If the squeak is still there by Friday, my day off, I will do the drivers side. The clunks and pops will wait until the squeaks go away.
