Issues with the power rear gate?

My apologies in advance for stupid question time. My recently-acquired 2018 doesn't seem to be opening on it's own with any real consistency. Effectively all I get is a long beep whenever trying to open or close, this happens from in the car, the tailgate button and the remote. I've seen it randomly work twice, but that's it.

Is there anything I should check out prior to dragging it to the dealer like an idiot?

Check that the power trunk is switched on. Button is below steering while by your right knee.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I checked that as well. I got rather excited when I saw it in hopes that it was the smoking gun.

If you press the liftgate button twice (on the gate itself) the lift portion should allow a manual open. Then, can you check to make sure the tailgate is fully closed and latched?

Are you out of warranty? If yes, do you have access to Techstream? There are a couple of error codes that might help troubleshoot.
