Is this normal? Anyone else have this sucking noise when they shut off the engine?

When I shut off the engine in my 04 LC I hear this repetitive sucking noise coming from or near my gas cap. I think it's normal but I can't find anything about it in this forum or anywhere else. It might be that the noise is constant even when the engine is on but I only notice it when I get out and go near the rear. Thanks for the input!

Could be air passing through the side-rear vents to equalize the interior's pressure.

yep, have it too, sounds like a frog of sorts

I would have a shop test your gas cap if that is where the sound originates. There should not be any leaking from the cap. If there is then you are having expensive fuel evaporate into the air. This will also cause you to fail an emmisions inspection or trip a CEL.

If it comes from the rear vents when a passenger closes the door then it is perfectly normal.

I'll open the gas cap while it's "croaking" to see if it goes away. If it does, then I have a problem like NMuzj100 said. It might very well be the rear vent though. Thanks for the help.

Okay, the noise is coming from the gas cap. It has been doing this since I bought this vehicle. Do you guys think I should take it to the local dealership to have them look at it? Anyone else with an 04 LC hearing the same sucking (croaking) noise coming from their gas cap when they turn off the engine.

Sounds like you found your problem. Faulty cap! I'd go get a new one. You want a tight seal.

my wife mentioned that noise once at the dealer, they could not find the source, blabbered some platitudes, and did nothing...

how do you know it's the cap? removing the cap could very well stop the noise someplace else...

True it could, but I can even feel the slight vibration when I touch the cap.

I have a 2004 4runner with the same engine and I don't have this noise. I would take it to the dealer. Sounds like you have a bad gasket on the gas cap.

Since it is a part of the fuel/emissions system they should give you a new gas cap. Friend had a CEL come on in his Altima took it to the dealership and when it was all said and done that was the problem. THe vehicle was out of regular warranty but the gas cap was free, they said they had to provide it? Just a thought.

Gas cap is covered under the extended emmisions warranty.

I am under correction but this does sound a bit strange.

The cap should make a pretty good seal. As the fuel drops in the tank a vacume will be created. Part of the fuel supply system is a valve that ensures that the correct pressure is kept inside the tank. This is fixed to the tank with a gasket and fuel tank breather hose

By your description is sounds like you have a vacume in the tank and that air is been sucked in and not blown out. Is this correct?

If it is been sucked in then most likely the fuel tank pressure control valve has gone faulty or its breather pipe is blocked.

Bongani, it does sound and appear to be a sucking not a blowing noise. I'm going to take it to Toyota soon to have it looked at. I went by there yesterday and the service department told me I would have to drop it off all day. I'm used to Lexus where it isn't a big deal since they give you rental car during the down time. Such a hassle.....

They wouldn't just let you try a new gas cap?
