170k miles original valve covers and time for a change. Passenger side valve train looks great- super clean. Driver side looks very clean as well but as you get towards the back you can see a little bit of varnish on the surfaces- no sludge. Bottom side of valve cover was dry on the back two cylinders and had some build up.

Others might know better, but i’m not concerned.
 
I believe that's pretty typical for these 2uz. Most of the ones I've pulled on these motors are clean PS while DS has some varnish towards rear. Nothing to be concerned with IMO
 
The DS rear will have the most varnish since that area of the engine runs the hottest due to the brake booster and the charcoal canister (for earlier years).
