Hi all,
Im looking for help Identifying the source of a wet fluid spot on the connection between the front differential and left CV axle on my 91 Xtracab pickup 3.0 V6.
The fluid feels oily but does not have the sulfuric smell of diff oil. Because of the lack of smell and the lack of build up on the flange inside of the gear shaft I did not think this was a diff seal leak. I thought it might be fluid dripping down from to a bad leak I had in the power steering gear, or a small oil leak coming from the valve cover gasket. I rebuilt the steering gear and resealed the valve cover. They are no longer leaking, yet this wet spot persists. I have inspected the oil filter and oil pan that both sit above this spot and neither are leaking. Now I think this might be a diff seal leak, however I find this even more unlikely after looking at my FSM. It appears that the seal sits on the other side of the tube encapsulating the gear shaft. I find it hard to believe that the oil would travel all the way through the tube and leek out without pooling on the underside of the tube.
Please see inclosed pictures and let me know what you think.
Thanks
Here is a picture of the spot.
Here is a picture of the FSM digram (location of fluid build up in red, oil seal in green)
