I always change my oil based on when it gets dark and dirty. I've never used synthetic. Does it change color like standard oil?

That is the wrong way to tell when your oil needs to be changed, you cannot tell the condition of the oil by the color.
All oils change color, how quickly depends on how quickly it gets contaminated with dirt, fuel, water and everything else that gets into the oil.

For some good reading.

Wow...I wonder how many more miles I could get if I knew when to change my oil?

That is exactly what I am saying that I have always done.

I change mine every 5,000 miles no matter the time frame. Everytime there is a "0" or a "5" third from the left on the odometer I change my oil.
No sticker needed. I don't worry about the "100's".
I last changed my oil at 155,change miles. I've only had my truck a month. The dealer changed the oil but I changed it after I bought it.
Next oil change is at 160,change miles.
Changing your oil to often will not hurt anything and it won't make the engine last longer. All that does is waste time and money.
Waiting to long to change it shortens engine life.
Oil changes are called PM's, (preventative maintence).
Oil does have a shelf life expiration date. Motor oil is biodegradable. Motor oil is volatile, meaning it evaporates.
Sun breaks down motor oil, leave a bottle of oil sitting on the shelf in your garage in the sun, it won't be any good in a month or so.
The base stock (what they start with to make oil) never ever goes bad or wears out but it does get contaminated. It is the additives that go bad and wear out.
Sludge is formed when the additives wear out and boil off and then condense on the cooler internal engine parts. They then cling to one another and the sludge gets thicker and thicker until it finally restricts oil flow, keeps lifters and valves and valve springs from working properly.
ALL motor oil additives wear out and break down and form sludge eventually. Even full synthetics.
There are three types of full synthetics. Conventianal base stock and synthetic additives. Semi conventional base stock and full synthetic additives and finally full synthetic base stock and full synthetic additives.
Just because it says full synthetic means nothing. There are great conventional oils that out perform cheap full synthetics.
Extended life oils have more anti wear additives in them. That sounds good right? Well if you have an older engine, not so much. The additives will get into the exhaust and ruin your O2's and cat's.
Unless you drive 20,000 miles or more a year long life oils are not worth buying.
Stay away from Fram oil filters at all costs.
WIX, Purolator and Baldwin are the ones to buy. NAPA's are made by WIX.
