Is there a reason why people don't get 265/65/17?

Hi all,

First time poster here. I have a 2019 GX460 I am finally looking into modding a bit, and am leaning heavily towards getting the TRD Pro Wheels (super original, I know).

I'd like to stay as close to stock tire diameter, etc. so that my speedo is accurate, and based on some web calculators online, it looks like 265/65/17 provides the closest match.

However, upon doing some searches, I've found that most people just opt to go with 265/70/17. Is there a reason for that besides getting a bigger tire? Is there something bad about going 265/65/17?

Thanks in advance, and looking forward to being a part of this community.

Most try to fit as big of a tire as possible and that's likely the reason why they go with the 265/70 over the 265/65 as it's almost 1" taller. You will see a 1mph difference on your speedo at 70 mph with the larger tire, not a big issue for most.

Thank you so much for the reply! This helps a lot. I can live with 1 mph difference for sure, I thought it would be a lot more drastic. Appreciate it!

I have 285/70/17's on mine and I am only off by 2-3 mph at 70 mph.

For what you're looking to do, you may want to be sure whatever size you go with that it still fits in the stock spare location.

I’m also running 265/70/17. A little more meat on the tires but keeps the speedo accurate and I have a spare FJ wheel/tire that fits underneath.

I am debating between the 265/65/17 and the 255/70/17 at the moment since the 265/70/17 does not seem to fit in the stock spare location (or at least it doesn't with a non-LT Falken Wildpeak).
Here is quick table:
__Size______Diameter_____ Width
265/60/r18____30.6"_________10.5"____Stock Tire
255/70/r17____31.1"_________10.2"
265/65/r17____30.6"_________10.6"
265/70/r17____31.7"_________10.8"

Edit: a 265/70/r17 does fit in the spare spot. I had to move the OEM hitch as far to the rear as possible and air down the tire to 32PSI to get it to fit.

To add a data point for you, I am running a 265/70/17 on a -10 offset and have rubbing when reversing at close to full lock. Maybe those TRD pro’s wont, but a consideration.

With my OEM tires/wheels on my '11...265-60x18's (IIRC)

speedo read 2-3 over...as per my GPS

Swapped them out to 265-70x17's and speedo read dead nuts as per GPS

Go figure ? Useful links below

At what speed where you over by 2 to 3 mph?
When you increase your tire size, your new speed will be a percentage (usually faster, assuming you have larger tires) of what's on your speedo reads.
Example: my tires (LT285/75R17 BFG M/T KM2) increase my speed by almost a perfect 10%. So at 50 mph on my dash, my GPS speed is actually 55 mph.
When I'm doing 70 mph on my speedo, my phones GPS says 77 mph, and of course at 30 mph, I'm actually going 33 mph.

I don't have my numbers memorized with certainty, but I recall the dash cluster reading 2-3 MPH slow at highway speeds (65-75 somewhere in there) when stock too, now that I'm running 285/75s, I think on my last road trip I noticed my cluster reading was about 1-2 MPH slower than actual at 75-80 MPH.

Comparing the two using a GPS speedo app on my phone, not sure of accuracy. But with 1-2 MPH discrepancy, either way, I'm not worried.

I like to compare speedo reading to handheld GPS unit and verify that with the GPS speed indicated on my HAM radio. I have found my speedo is off by 12% slower than actual speed indicated by GPS.

I then set my Scan Gauge to read +12% to indicated on the instrument cluster.

This has also been the way I calculate fuel economy. Actual miles driven as displayed on the GPS divided by gallons pumped at refill.

I'm currently running 275/70 R18 (33.2") but it took lots of wheel well reshaping and grinding down the lip of the body mount (about 1/8th if an inch). I also got an alignment and asked them to max out the camber which also moves the wheel further to the front. Also they are LT tires which weight like 15lbs each more than a P rated tire...and I feel that I can "feel" the weight.

I decided on P265/70 r18 for longer term... For me it's a good compromise considering I only get to off road about once a month.

When traveling, I just use Google Maps. It has both the posted speed limit of the road I'm on and also my current speed. So wherever I'm at, I just glance down at my phone and can see what the posted speed is and what my actual speed is. Very handy when out of town and you see local authorities in your rear view mirror.
BUT the speed feature is ONLY available on Android and iOS. Sorry Apple folk...
