Is my CD repairable...does it make sense?

Searched and searched and searched, just not sure what to do. '97 Cruiser with "56807" factory sound (or no sound) system. Radio works, tape player works, CD will accept disc but nothing happens, no lights on panel or anything. Read all of the threads already.... so I tried to clean it with a disc. No luck!

Sprayed electrical cleaner into CD & Tape, then followed with light shop air (filtered) to dry everything out. Now the unit will take a CD and spit it back out, take it again on it's own and spit it back out about 5 times before it quits.

Is it worth fixing? I have looked at some of the aftermarket stuff and they are HIDEOUS!
Tiny little buttons, futuristic space station looking crap, etc...

I really like the OEM unit just fine but I suspect I am going to be told to swap it out for something newer. Who can fix these things, for how much, and where are they?

Got to have "tunes". Thank you in advance.

Well...you didn't read them all...so I'll re-cap.

Get a new one or find someone here on the board that has a factory stereo that he replaced. Someone got hooked up with one in another thread just this week. Cool thing about replacing it however is you can then add a CB radio in the empty spot and wheel with your local TLCA. Have fun.

I've got two that I would part with. I could get the model numbers tomorrow. One is a 94 and it is currently in the 94 and working fine. The other is out of my 91 and worked fine when removed. It has been sitting in a bag on the shelf for awhile. Reason for parting with my 94 stereo? I'm moving to MP3s. My 91 has a 10 disc MP3 changer that never skips. It also holds a ton of music. I drove from Idaho to Silverton, Colorado without listening to the same song twice on one CD. And I've got 10 of them! So I'd like to have the same system in our 94 so I can use the same magazines and discs. I have a ton of effort into converting some 300 CDs into MP3s. I'd like to make it more worthwhile by making both units the same.

I never thought about how cool it would be to talk with your wheeling buddy's, That's a good replacement when my radio goes. Used the cleaning disk this evening and the cd reads fine now.

Sometimes my factory CD player does the same thing.

I have to power the unit on/off and it works again, but once mine totally stopped working. I unpluged it from the dash played around with it (looking for a fuse) and it started working again.

Maybe the same will work for you?

Well, at this point I may as well pull it from the dash and get it disassembled to have a look. Heck...it might have a paper clip or half a bottle of Coke in there (who knows)!
If you look at the replacement cost (new) then you would expect it to be a fairly decent unit.
I know the electronics industry is highly competitive and that technology has advanced tremendously in the last 8 years. Unquestionably there are better units out there with which to replace this one and I would not argue that point with anyone. But, my God...are they ugly. Or possibly I just haven't looked at enough of them.
The OEM is fine with me if I can get it to work or have it repaired. It might be better to just replace it with another 56807 as someone here suggested. It makes you wonder how long a repaired or replaced unit would last before it too displayed a problem. Thanks for your reply.

I really couldn't find a aftermarket unit worth a hoot, that's why I put my old one back in.

If you do decide to go aftermarket, I'm sure that most on here would like to know how it turns out.

Please keep us informed. :)

Seems like there was an outfit on ebay that sold re-furbished/re-manufacturer ones for around $350 to $400 with old unit swap. May have been the 6 disc. changer now that I think of it.
