is a 100 series right for me?

I have both a 62 and 100.

The wife drives our kid around in the 100. It also gets used on road trips for skiing, or long road trips around the US. She loves the truck, as do I. I also would not hesitate to take it off road, or for camping in back country areas.

That being said, we both love the 62 as well. I have been working on it for the past 5 years, slowly getting it to where I want it (still not done). We use it for mostly camping and wheeling. It is not our daily driver. We will be taking it on a 10 trip in Baja soon. I feel very confident in the rig getting me there and back, no matter where we take it. I would also feel comfortable taking the 100, but there are IMHO more things to go wrong on the 100.

I think the 100 is a great rig, and eventually will mod it. I however cant part with my 62 as I love using it.

You have a hard choice IMO. Good luck

I will try to make this a technical question and not chat...

My current situation is that I own an FJ62 with 175k but I am selling it https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=84513.

I am selling it for the following reasons:
-It requires too much work - too much preventative maint.
-I worry about it too much - the miles are adding up and i just dont want to be stranded with a car full of camping gear, bikes, a dog and the girlfriend pissed at me.
-I wheel 4x a year max and I realized that I prefer more adventure/expedition type wheeling rather than the hard core stuff... My 62 is more capable than I need it to be.

Now I am looking at 100s. So, is the 100 the right truck for me? For taking on long trips with some dirt roads involved but doing do with so with confidence? I can only afford one in the 75 - 100k mi range. How many more miles do the more modern 100s have on them before I start worrying about it?

Peepers: Go for it! My '98 has over 202K and still kickin'.....and I have not treated her particularly well.....only left me stranded once....a fuel pump....my bad......I had some clues in advance, but just ignored 'em........

I have had several 100's (98, 00, 01, 05) The 00 and 01 I took to over 150 and never had a problem. The 05 my wife drives and is just as good as the rest. The 98 sold to a friend who drove it 2 years and sold it to another friend for a year and now I am buying back for a trail rig with 150k on it. I also have a 60 that I love to play with. I have done almost all I can with it short of lockers. I do not like driving it on the interstate or long distances at high speed and therefore trailer it to longer locations. I want the 100 to be able to drive to farther trails and still wheel. If you take out the price tag I think that the 100 is the best car on the road bar none. I have never done anything to mine other than normal service work. My father and sister also drive them and have never spent a dime. Not everyone can afford a new one but the price on older one make them in the reach of most people. There is no comparison in the 80's and 100. The 100 is more powerfull, more reliable, and comfortable. That said I still love the 80's, partly because of the truck feel. I know that Toyota produced a lot of 98 99 and 00 100's and had lots of lease packages that put a lot of 100's on the road. They flooded the market and caused a price drop on the used ones because of all the off lease cars that hit the market. Starting with the 01 Toyota drastically cut back production of the 100 and I belive that the market will reverse and in a few years the 02 03 04 and so on models will be harder to find and the price drop will slow down. Buy the 100 and you will love it in a different way than your 62.
