IPTMAN's exhaust dilemma

I've heard the ones Marks off-road makes are the ones to get but it seems he only does a run when he has significant interest.

I'd rather find a decent Fed spec manifold. Does anyone know if I can use any 2F manifold of do I need specific years for my 77? There's a guy selling one off a 84 60 in the classifieds.

You should be able to use any 2F manifold... didn't we discuss this?

Don't yell at him Stump he is learning!!!
Yes you can use any 2F manifold!
What is wrong with yours?

And my 40 is a California spec 77 and my manifold looks like this....

It doesn't matter what your cali exhaust manifold looks like...they all bolt up to the intake manifold the same way.
Cali exhaust manifolds are almost unobtanium and those that exist go for BIIIIIG bucks, like $1K+.

Yeah but this thing heats up something fierce, and quick too. I can't drive 2 miles for a quick trip to the store without dealing with vapor lock when I get back. And the 77s don't have the carb fan either.

You are also missing the Asbestos heat shield!
I have a carb fan on my 60 I will see if it works this weekend.
I sold the intake last year. And the ones I have are cracked also.

If I go headers do I need to desmog? I PMed Mark Algazey (sp?) to see if he was doing another run of the Downey header design. I think he posted it was an $8k commit per run.

I went ahead and bought that 84 2f manifold. The guy says it's solid. $70 shipped, seemed like a good deal.

Sounds like the bi-metal Heat Control Valve in the exhaust manifold is stuck open. It should close as the truck warms up blocking heat to the carb. it's a common issue for it to get stuck in the open position. Unfortunately, the excessive heat often creates fractures in the bottom of the intake manifold that will allow fuel to leak into the exhaust.

Sooo...make sure you check your intake manifold for cracks. I had the same issue. After two attempts to have it welded, I finally replaced it with a FJ60 intake manifold

That would be the famous "thermonuclear" exhaust manifold. They get so hot, they tend to crack the bottom of the intake manifold. They also are no longer required to pass CA smog, so the only value today is for a purist who wants a completely OE truck.
