This is one of my first post in tech, but I've gotten a ton of useful information from lurking since a couple months before I got my 80 in October, so thanks for all the help I've already gotten.

When I plug my iPod into the tape adapter my ds speakers are noticeably quieter than my ps speakers. I've tried a few brands of casette adapters, and they all do it, but all work fine in my civic. This is not an issue with the CD changer, or the radio, just my iPod. Unfortunately, the iPod is all I'm interested in listening to.

I'm thinking about a new head unit, but if I'm going to do that, I want new speakers, and I understand the thing to do there is bypass the factory amp. While I wouldn't mind a real audio upgrade, (head unit, all 7 speakers And an amp), I'm not looking to spend $1500 or $2000, and don't have the space to do it myself.

The sound when listening to a cd on the factory system is actually pretty decent for a 15 year old truck, and I fear ditching the factory amp, dash speakers, and console "sub" (ha!) in favor of a new head and speakers would actually be downgrading? I'm thinking of mid grade kenwood/alpine/pioneer stuff. Maybe a $200 head and $75 on each set of speakers. Thoughts? Thanks!

Have you try cleaning the cassette deck, using a cleaning cassette?

That may be worth a try.

You may also want to looking into replacing the head unit with a Scion unit. A search will yield lots of info.

Does it do the same with a cassette tape? (I know, what's that?) If so, then maybe it is a bad/dirty head. Does cycling forward and reverse help?

Holy crap. I feel really stupid. I'm 31 years old. I lived through tapes. I should have remembered the head cleaner. Totally forgot that could be an issue. Oh, analog.... How quaint. I don't have a head cleaner, but I did find an old copy of DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince's "I'm the rapper, he's the DJ", and a few drops of rubbing alcohol on the tape and a quick FF did the trick. Sounds great. Thanks!!

Great to hear you got it working even if you have to ruin a copy of that fine album.
