Don't forget release agent. I use clear shoe polish.
Thanks for the tip, I plan on practicing with some random objects if I do decide to tackle it myself.

Honestly after much thought I would prefer a mount that holds it and charges it and can be removed and replaced with a new mount when it dies.

It being the unknown device I have yet to choose lol. It just seems like every mobile device ever gets phased out and becomes near useless withing 3-4 years and I plan on owning the cruiser for longer than that. And a spendy and difficult dash remodel every 4 years sounds like a hassle. That said if the new Ipad has same form factor as the last maybe its a trend starting in the right direction...

Gaia GPS is great for Android and iOS but on an apple it is really hard to beat GPSKit. Such a good interface.

I am VERY interested in this to get the ram mount off my dash.

I messed with a raspberry pi for data logging in my 80. The problem I found was shutting it down nicely after the vehicle was shut down. I kept corrupting sd cards.

I have some plans for a media server using a Mac mini and I'd like to incorporate an arduino for viewing sensor data and switching relays from my iPad dash.

What is your reason for disliking apple products?

He's a Micro$hit lover or prefers to support the underdog :meh:

Shutdown is my main problem with carputers also. I was going to run the power from const. I was thinking of writing a piece of code that when the ignition was turned off if would send a signal to start a power down sequence. I've got a word document with some of my ideas in it. I would probably use a beaglebone or something with more flexibility than the Pi.

I really hate iTunes. I had it installed for a while but it would lock my video files in place and it took me 6 month to figure out I had to uninstall to move stuff around. Actually I think Apple makes good products but I like that Android is open source. Also a lot cheaper than apple because that is all I buy my wife...new iPohne, MacBooks etc. :(

What are you hoping to get out of the Carputer? I think a tablet of any kind android or apple or even windows would fit your needs better than a beaglebone and in the end probably cheaper. At minimum you need the device and a screen, if you want GPS you have to add a gps shield. Right there you are up to the cost of a cheap tablet which will have all of these things built in and functioning already. Any OS you are running on it is more of desktop look/feel which won't be well suited to in vehicle use.

We should start a new thread under electronics/toys if we want to carry on about this, I'd like to know more about what you are planning. I just don't see a use for the Raspberry PI/Beaglebone or Arduino outside of monitoring or interacting with hardware.

With android devices, you can root it and run tasker to set up your shutdown/pause/startup sequences.

I've been reading up on this, and am still trying to sort out what I want for a device. I was leaning toward a samsung tab 3 7inch, or a tab 4 7inch, but noticed the resolution is much greater on the tab 4 devices.

Think an Samsung 8 inch tab could fit in the stock radio area?

Curious to see what gets announced on the 16th. Then this mod may get moved up.

Looks like the iPad Mini was neglected this round. The only change as far as I can tell is touch ID. Everything else is exactly the same, didn't even get the A8 processor.

Ok. This is going to sound really stupid bit how did you get sound to amplifier? I guess more accurately to the Matrix 6 channel? I am assuming not using the 3.5mm plug. I'm also assuming you lost your FM capability.

Its covered in first or second post. Sound is passed through an audio controller to split into different channels and boost signal. Then out to amp.

3D printers are super cool, I should have bought one long ago.

Iphone 6 Plus mount that fits right into the 95-97 dash with no modification required. Working on tabs that will hold it in place that can be quickly released to remove it from the dash. Right now it's just pressure fit in place. My iPhone 6 Plus is back ordered and won't be here for 4 weeks so I had to print the phone too. Tweaking this version to fit a 91-94.

Bad ass. What printer are you using?

Robo 3D R1. Don't have any experience with anything else but I like it so far. Has a large heated print bed and was under $1000. The extruder isn't the best so I've ordered a better one but other than that it seems to work great.

Wow thats not a bad price. What does the raw material run?

Filament runs about 25-35 per 1kg spool for pla or abs.

@sxwatson You have done some really good work and I appreciate the inspiration! Just a couple things to add:

You should cut the three switch holes on the top of the later 80 bezel and move it down to only lose the one antenna switch since there is the extra space around the diff lock switch.

For the Raspberry Pi shutdown switch you can get one of these: (They are cheap and sell out fast.)

Also, how many of those phone holders can you make with a spool?

Here is a bad photoshop of the switches moved and a sound processor/EQ in the dash. The only reason I was thinking of that was it is nice to have a master volume knob for fast mute/crank. Also this one, Audio Control Three.1, has a left/right RCA input and outputs front/rear/sub without signal loss and full adjustability.

so cool. nicely done as usual

I have a volume knob on my setup. It's a remote knob for the Matrix Audio Controller. The audio controller lives in the glove box. There isn't enough room behind the dash for it.
