Morning all - just a quick thread regarding my IPF headlight upgrade in my '85 FJ60.

I recently purchased and installed the IPF M002 Wiring Harness from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters; very much plug and play, and despite me trying to overthink it the install was very straight forward and everything works great (even the high beam indicator).

For those installing the harness, note that the two connectors wrapped in YELLOW tape in the first pic below are what you unwrap and plug together to get the blue high beam indicator to work. The instructions IPF includes aren't terribly explicit.

After installing the wiring harness and ensuring everything works, I went ahead and purchased the IPF headlights - two of the IPF 920H and two of the IPF 80w H4 bulbs - IPFHHC1211080 - all from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters again.

And, before anyone comments - I know that these are for off road use only - I live in a very rural area of NE Oregon, and the 60 is essentially the mountain rig. I would NOT be installing 80w bulbs if I had to deal with a lot of traffic.

Installed the headlights and bulbs last night, and all I can say is WOW. Fantastic. Very nice quality, and obviously a massive improvement over the Hella's I was running.

I don't have any before/after pics of the lights versus the Hellas, but take my word for it they are brighter. If I had to contend with traffic/more urban areas I would have probably opted for a lower wattage bulb, but I am hoping that by stepping up to the 80w bulbs I can avoid installing any driving lights.

Looks like a nice clean install. What are the other watts avail?

Clint

From Kurt's website I know that they offer the standard 55/60w as well as a 100/170w in single bulb quantities, but one of the other options I looked at was the 60/80w bulbs sold as a pair.

I was looking at the bulbs which are towards the bottom of the page: http://cruiseroutfitters.com/IPF.html

I have used 80/100's in city with no problems. I took lots of care aiming them, and have cibie lenses with great optics and a clear cut-off. I have the same harness from Kurt and it works great. I did have one problem...a relay failed after 4 years. I'd suggest having a spare on hand.

Good tip about the relay. I have the same harness, and I would like to keep a few relays on hand. Any idea what brand or model relay to buy? Where can I source a relay?

Thanks,
Zack

Just go to any auto parts store and get a Bosch 4 terminal 30a relay.

I did this same upgrade with the same bulbs and it's worth every penny. It makes you feel like you had two Zippos out in front before the conversion.

I need this. Stock lamps are ridiculous. Is it simple enough for someone with little experience?

Yes!

All you need is a Phillips screwdriver and a wrench for connecting to the battery terminals. Very straightforward and will maybe take you an hour from start to finish.

I drove a little over 120 miles this past Monday evening, and I was blown away at how fantastic the lights were, both the low beams and the highs. I should have done this years ago.

Has anyone tried this on the FJ62 with four lights? It looks like an add-on harness to the two headlight harness.

I snoozed too long on the one offered by member slcfj62.

Thanks,
Jim

it can be done(have one on the wife's 62), years ago someone use to make a kit for the 62, it uses a diode and its not as straight forward as doing H4's.....but the quads will REALLY light up.

I am a light junky, I will point out one thing about the IPF headlights(and I have 2 sets at least and I like them)

they do not have the proper cut off for either a LHD or RHD rig like a true E Code H4. The best are Cibie E codes, then Hella E codes. A true E code will let you run higher wattage bulbs without pissing off anyone(or a bit less)

I run some sort of upgraded lights and harness on all my Cruisers

pic of a OEM Toyota Koito E Code headlamp from France in my FJ40, notice how the glass is flutted/cut too shine the lower beam to the side. and yes this one is backasswards its a RHD in a LHD 40.....but screw it they are bad-ass and yellow ;)

I've used Hella brand 55/100 bulbs for several decades. Those leave me legal on the low beams, but add a bit more when I need the highs. I would do relays first, then upgraded lens/reflectors and bulbs. Without the relays you won't get the full benefit of the upgraded lights, and the you risk the OE wiring harness with higher wattage (amperage) bulbs.

Thanks again! Glad the high beam indicator is working as it should

i have had the IPF harness for my 62 for about 4 months. was super easy to install but my bright indicator is not working. the brights are awesome with hella 55 watt and i have the 100/80 watt low beams. they are really dim. i have the hella E code housings which i think are good. are these common problems...

1) not having the high beam indicator working
2) poor low beam output

thanks for the info.

in addition to my earlier post the wires that need to be connected are connected and I still have no high beam indicator. I suppose it's possible the bulb burned out in the dash but are there other things to look out for or correct with this harness?

franklin40, did you get your dim low beam and no high beam indicator problem fixed? I just installed the m002/m004 ARB kit in my 89 fj62 and have the same issues.

High beams are good and bright, low beams are dim and no high beam indicator. All of the lights turn on for each position of the switch, but low are way to dim.

I'm guessing this is a grounding issue on the low beam circuit since I believe the indicator works off of that circuit. I've double checked the diagrams from ARB (which didn't have much detail in them) and all seems to be correct.

I may try swapping the relays around since 3 of them are the same and see if that changes anything. If not, have to get the wire diagram out and start working through the system.

Dim Low beam and no high beam indicator--fixed

Figured out the problem with the dim low beams and non working high beam indicator after installing the ARB M002/M004 in my 62.

If you are keeping your stock sealed beam lights you will have to re-wire the headlight connectors of the M002 harness. You also have to re-wire the pick-up connector of that harness as well. It has to match how the original headlight harness is. There is a diagram on page 2 of the M002 instructions. There is also a note just above the diagram that mentions if you are 'retaining original headlights some reworking may be required"

I rewired the pick-up but failed to see the note about the headlight connector the 10 times I read the instructions. Figured it out by troubleshooting the harness and fixing it. I then went back to the instructions and there was the note. Duh.

Anyway, headlights all working brighter now and High beam indicator is working as well.

slcjf62 is making the harness again, it is extremely brainless install, which is what I needed. Everything works, I think the Hign beam indicator is actually brighter than it was. Had the IPF harness, could NEVER get the high beam indicator to work, now for sale if anyone wants it.
