Hello All!

This is my first 4x4, second Toyota, 7th car, and 100,000,000th forum I've joined. So don't worry, I know my way around a FAQ thread and search function :). I also love to post write-ups, film how-to's on my YouTube channel, and used to host garage geek out sessions to help newbies or learn something from the gurus.

I basically have no experience off-roading or camping. Grew up a suburb kid and the "outdoors" for us was playing sports. Never slept in a tent until I was 19 and in the Marine Corps. Once I got a taste of being in what felt like the middle of nowhere and having to carry everything you need on your back -- I was HOOKED. After the Marine Corps I focused on college, working full-time and taking care of business.

Turned 30 this year, bought our first house last year, and finally have nothing to do nights and weekends, so it was time to get into another hobby. Previously, I've been about going fast. Started with small 4-bangers and moved my way up to a '99 M3 (not a fan of newer cars). LOVED that car, but my lead foot is slowly turning back to flesh and bone. Each year I grow more and more tired of living in the city/burbs and I have almost become desensitized to driving fast -- and that gets dangerous. So now we're trying to get outdoors as much as we can from now on.

This Land Cruiser will be built (slowly but surely) as an Expedition / Overland rig. I specifically searched for a LC for this reason. It's ready to go out this weekend in stock form, and as I learn new skills and reach new limits, I'll upgrade. I like to fail, fail fast, and fail often. My first camping trip I brought a tent, bed blankets, a pillow, sandwiches and a case of beer. Learned real fast that things like fire, warmth and support for my sketchy back were important. Second camping trip I learned I like coffee too much to give it up despite being in the woods, axes are really-really fun and leave blisters if you have too much fun, and the best camping spots required a 4x4. Went out with my buddy in his Jeep and left telling him, "Next time, I'm driving... selling the Bimmer!"

I am big on DIY and love to do write-ups, how-to videos and share as much info as I can. Here are a few photos as it sits today... dealer provided as you can tell. It's a 2001, paid $11,600 and it has 150k. Chump change and mileage for Toyotas, right?

awesome story, thanks for sharing. you definitely did your homework in choosing a good rig to start with, the land cruiser series pretty much sets the bar and you heep buddy might get jealous ;) rig looks pretty clean and IMO you're getting a great price for the low mileage, it's a rust-free truck from the SW, and it's even w/o NAV! lots of info here on these forums for upgrading your rig with anything you might need for camping and/or expeditioning. have a good one!

welcome aboard... looks like another nice Hundy rescued from mall duty.

Welcome to the forum, sounds like you will be a welcome addition to an already helpful forum. Looking forward to your DYI videos and following your build.

Welcome,

Get yourself over to the Copper State Page and meet up with us for some outings! As a matter of fact there is a stocker friendly run this saturday if you're interested. Will be lots of folks at various life stages and build stages on their cruisers. I had seen that 01 for a while and looked clean. Get rid of the Grill smasher and its a great start!

Congrats and Welcome to MUD! You'll notice several of us 100 owners are also fans of the E36 M3! Both iconic vehicles!

I have had a handful of E36 M3s as well...Might have thrown in a E39 M5 and and E46 for good measure as well! :)

Thanks guys. Stoked on it and yes, that bumper is GOING! Already have it on Craigslist!!

It won't be modded anytime soon just because we're still renovating our house. However, in stock form it'll get me where I need to go. My cousin has a 4Runner and we'll be out as often as the wives will let us be. We already schemed to give them gift cards to Target while we go play in the dirt .

Found the page. Will have to talk to the wife about this one. I'd be super stoked to get it out this weekend. Planned on a trip up to Payson to go with a friend and his Jeep, buuuut, may just have to convince him to ride along with me to this. We will see!

Got 'er home! Luckily she still fits in the garage, but if I have my way she won't fit for very long :)

Also decided to go around with my paint thickness gauge to see if my eyes were correct, and sure enough it's been repainted in a few areas. Passenger fender and door have been repainted, rear driver fender has bondo, and the rest of the car is pretty stock paint. Not worried one bit about the paint. Plan on wrapping it or installing custom Arizona Pinstripes. Either way, this car wasn't bought to be pretty.

Can't wait to take this thing out! Almost decided to camp in it tonight!

I thought I recognized your username, now that you mention paint gauge I know from where, one of the detailing forums.

Yup, that would be me. Like I said, this ain't my first forum. I stopped detailing a little over 2 years ago. Got to a high level of competence, and then got bored. Sold all my gear and bought woodworking stuff. That and the LC are my new hobbies.

congrats and welcome!
