Hello All!
This is my first 4x4, second Toyota, 7th car, and 100,000,000th forum I've joined. So don't worry, I know my way around a FAQ thread and search function
. I also love to post write-ups, film how-to's on my YouTube channel, and used to host garage geek out sessions to help newbies or learn something from the gurus.
I basically have no experience off-roading or camping. Grew up a suburb kid and the "outdoors" for us was playing sports. Never slept in a tent until I was 19 and in the Marine Corps. Once I got a taste of being in what felt like the middle of nowhere and having to carry everything you need on your back -- I was HOOKED. After the Marine Corps I focused on college, working full-time and taking care of business.
Turned 30 this year, bought our first house last year, and finally have nothing to do nights and weekends, so it was time to get into another hobby. Previously, I've been about going fast. Started with small 4-bangers and moved my way up to a '99 M3 (not a fan of newer cars). LOVED that car, but my lead foot is slowly turning back to flesh and bone. Each year I grow more and more tired of living in the city/burbs and I have almost become desensitized to driving fast -- and that gets dangerous. So now we're trying to get outdoors as much as we can from now on.
This Land Cruiser will be built (slowly but surely) as an Expedition / Overland rig. I specifically searched for a LC for this reason. It's ready to go out this weekend in stock form, and as I learn new skills and reach new limits, I'll upgrade. I like to fail, fail fast, and fail often. My first camping trip I brought a tent, bed blankets, a pillow, sandwiches and a case of beer. Learned real fast that things like fire, warmth and support for my sketchy back were important. Second camping trip I learned I like coffee too much to give it up despite being in the woods, axes are really-really fun and leave blisters if you have too much fun, and the best camping spots required a 4x4. Went out with my buddy in his Jeep and left telling him, "Next time, I'm driving... selling the Bimmer!"
I am big on DIY and love to do write-ups, how-to videos and share as much info as I can. Here are a few photos as it sits today... dealer provided as you can tell. It's a 2001, paid $11,600 and it has 150k. Chump change and mileage for Toyotas, right?
